Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am

The compilation of gozeuta tracks this song comes from ( here: www.discogs.com... ) states that it was recorded in 1954. I could be wrong, but I don't believe this is accurate. In 1954, the goze were not yet publicly valued enough for there to have been a recording session arranged for one of the performers. I believe this is from 1964. Would love confirmation on this.

Cecil Taylor was more Fred Astaire on the keys. Always a hint of elegance and touch no matter how jarring. Don Pullen's touch was often more Gene Kelly. More muscular and heavy. Not universally so for either artist, but a generalism that I think has some validity.

Six incredible state-funded bands from Mali performed at the First Biennale of Arts and Culture for the Young in 1970. This outrageously amazing album chronicles their best performance from that gathering: www.discogs.com...

One of the greatest compilations of African popular music ever!

↳ Song: "葛の葉子別れ []Kuzunoha-Kowakare" by "Kikue Sugimoto"
I did go down the goze uta rabbit hole. About to close some of the tabs open, decided to put some links here.

Seems that discogs repeats the info given by the record company.
www.offnote.org...
Twice it states that a highlight of the release is a 1954 recording of Sugimoto.

goze-museum.com...
This Goze Museum site list of important dates starts with Sugimoto in 1964 starting to focus on documenting her tradition and a well known Japanese artist learning of her work.

Without the full text of the notes on the release we cannot tell for sure if it is a 54 / 64 typo that got repeated or if somehow Sugimoto was recorded in 1954. I'm leaning to typo.

Additionally here is a goze uta school site. The page I link is interview with two elder practitioners who discuss Sugimoto and another of the last great goze uta teachers, Haru Kobayashi, that they learned from. There is a photo of the grave of Sugimoto.

ooph. brain fart. The goze uta school page is referencing Shizu Sugimoto, follower of Kikue Sugimoto. The grave monument is for the Sugimoto family.
