Andy Kaufman  I Trusted You   Favoriting n/a (Live performance on "The Midnight Special" , March 4, 1977  n/a  1977  (From Nerdist...) "...May 16, in 1984, Andy Kaufman passed away at the age of 35... Though the comedy world’s own John Keats was only around for a short time, man did he make a lasting impact. It’s hard to overstate his influence on comedy even to this day. Every time Will Ferrell shows up on a stage in a ridiculous costume, without any actual jokes, he’s standing on the shoulders of Andy Kaufman. It’s easy to see him in the work of Sasha Baron Cohen, or in newer, non-traditional comedy like you find with Tim and Eric, or even in the personality-centric performance of someone like Billy Eichner. Even cringe worthy shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, VEEP, and Silicon Valley owe something to him. //// Kaufman hated being called a comedian, seeing as how he never told any jokes, preferring the title of “performer” or “song and dance” man instead, but he might have been the funniest person ever to grace the world of comedy. By inverting the relationship between comedian and audience, making it so the audience did not actually know if they were watching a performance or not, and making their reaction the joke, he created a new way of entertaining... // "...you can’t honor a great song-and-dance man without a musical number, and this is one of his best. It just gets funnier and funnier the further it goes on, and every time you think he’s finally going to say something else it just becomes more amazing. // Andy Kaufman was the first person to realize it was just as funny to mess around with the audience as it was to make them laugh, and yet no one has ever done it better than him. It’s as though someone discovered a new way to play an instrument, and then no one else ever improved on it afterwards. How often is the first to do something also the greatest? // For a man that once took his entire Carnegie Hall audience out for milk and cookies following his show (really, he put them all on buses and brought them to a school cafeteria), the performance never ended, because that would ruin it. // It’s why some people still think he’s alive, patiently waiting us out..." Energy Slime  Clowning Around   Favoriting Planet Perfect  We Are Time  2024  "When so much in the world is broken and upsetting, why not make a sparkling DIY pop album with your spouse? That’s the resigned yet euphoric spirit of Planet Perfect, the debut album from Vancouver duo Energy Slime (Jay Arner and Jessica Delisle). //// Recorded amidst personal loss and worldwide lockdowns, the couple sought comfort in the place they’ve always found it: music. On Planet Perfect, they build a glittering universe across 10 tracks of skewed art pop and proggy electro-funk, finding refuge in a landscape of analogue synthesizers and harmonized hooks. //// The album's catchiest, most upbeat moments are laden with subliminal melancholy — but even at its darkest, sunshine still peeks out from between the clouds. The playful piano of "Negative Attention" underpins reflections on past trauma, while new wave title track “Planet Perfect” imagines a post-apocalyptic utopia, its glassy vocoder stripping the humanity away from a world that, let's face it, is probably better off without us. “Into the void, moan and moan” goes the sighing opener “Throw Me a Bone,” a self-eviscerating account of social discomfort that’s sweetened by phasing clavinet. //// Jay and Jessica self-recorded drums in their practice space, with nearly all of the overdubs and vocals added within the cozy confines of their one-room residence, giving new meaning to the term “studio apartment.” Despite the project's homemade origins, it's anything but lo-fi. Jay is a seasoned producer and engineer, having been the go-to recording maven for dozens of bands over the past decade-plus (including Apollo Ghosts, Tough Age, White Poppy and many, many more). //// Consequently, Planet Perfect is an audiophile's amusement park, its kaleidoscopic synthpop refracted through dimensions of sonic detail: the MIDI robo boogie that casts a spell on “Magic Wand,” the sci-fi drama that momentarily swooshes through “Clowning Around,” and the pattering congas that propel closer “After Life” to its ecstatic final crescendo. Guest saxophonist Mitch Davis plays a purring solo that ascends from the top turret of “Zucchini Castle,” and additional parts across the album are contributed by Kelli Ogmundson (backing vocals), Adrienne LaBelle (bass, guitar) and Sean Dunal a.k.a. Sexy Merlin (percussion). //// This vivid palette of sound is brought to life by visual artist Philip Hood, who illustrated the speculative evolution sci-fi book Man After Man (1990), and worked with Jay and Jessica to gloriously depict Planet Perfect’s surreal terrain for the cover artwork. https://energyslime.bandcamp.com/  *   0:10:05 (MP3 | Pop-up)
R.E.M.  King Of Comedy (808 State Remix)   Favoriting King Of Comedy (12" Promo)  Warner Bros. Records  1995  Remember that time 808 State remixed R.E.M. for a Dec 1995 promotional 12"? Yup, this is that. Remix and additional production by 808 State (Graham Massey, Darren Partington, Andrew Barker). --- Although this promo remix was later included on the 25th Anniversary Edition of "New Adventures In Hi-Fi", the original version of the song is from the previous album, 1994's "Monster". Since we started the set w/ Andy Kaufman, it seemed natural to look towards R.E.M. They wrote the song 'Man On The Moon' (in tribute to Andy Kaufman) and also oversaw (and wrote most) of the soundtrack for the movie (of the same title) about Kaufman. Unfortunately, those songs are pretty boring. This song fares a bit better, and 808 State makes it an anomaly. So we retain the comedic uncurrent of this set. --- This is from a strange point in R.E.M.'s career, where they were set to tour for the first time in a half decade and wanted to write an "arena and festival ready album" of songs that would translate to some sort of live-performance excitement for an audience & return to a more rock-based format after their previous (hugely successful, but sitting-on-stools-ready) acoustic based albums. Monster was an immediate success, hitting #1. It followed this by becoming an immediate (and enduring) bargain bin item, as people universally ditched their copies of the record. (In fact, in 2010 a popMATTERS writer documented his 7 year journey to sell his copy of the album -- Strange Currency: One Staff Writer’s Seven Year Journey to Sell the Most Toxic Used CD of All Time) This sudden universal dislike of the album led to an unusual measure: --- "R.E.M. decided to release a 25th anniversary deluxe edition of Monster in 2019, after having released such an edition for Monster's predecessor, Automatic for the People, in 2017. The edition contains remastered, live and demo versions of the songs from the album, as well as, unusually, a CD containing a fully remixed version of the album. The remix was the brainchild of original producer Scott Litt, who had long regretted the original mixing job he had done on Monster, which involved distortion and vocals low in the mix, in keeping with the grunge style popular at the time. He felt that the tracks were unnecessarily muddy and did not make for a cohesive album, and noted that, at used record stores, he always saw copies of Monster that people had given away, and rarely copies of R.E.M.'s other albums, indicating listener dissatisfaction. For the 25th anniversary remix, Litt made Stipe's and others' vocals more prominent and clearer, removed some instrumental tracks (like the tremolo guitar in the chorus of "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?"), and even used some different vocal takes, for example in "Strange Currencies". He cited the new version of "Let Me In", whose vocals are more comprehensible, as "maybe the best example of what's going on in the remix, which is simplicity". //// The members of R.E.M., while supportive of the remix, said that they were still happy with the original production, saying that, in Stipe's words, it conveyed "exactly who we were at that moment in time."" --- So yes, there are a few versions of these songs. //// Other details: ""Yes, I Am Fucking with You" was the working title of "King of Comedy"." //// Stipe was deeply impacted by the deaths of Kurt Cobain & River Phoenix, both of whom are paid tribute to by songs on the album. //// The band almost broke up making the album.    0:13:11 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Good Stuff is the B-52's sixth studio album. //// "It was conceived after the band's manager urged them to quickly issue a follow-up to their highly successful album Cosmic Thing (1989) and was created without founding member Cindy Wilson, who was on a temporary hiatus." //// "Guitarist Keith Strickland later stated that Good Stuff came about when the band's manager pushed them to quickly come up with a new album to follow up the success of Cosmic Thing, despite them being "burnt out" and "exhausted" from touring. Like Cosmic Thing, Good Stuff was produced jointly by Nile Rodgers and Don Was."

Lambrini Girls  God's Country   Favoriting God's Country/Body of Mine  City Slang  2024  UK's Lambrini Girls said of the track: “’Gods Country’ is our long, overdue call-out of the government and rise of the far right. We wrote this a few months back, when the political landscape had evidently reached a global boiling point. “Great Britain. Think colonial, shit-hole, chunk of land. Thriving off unhinged nationalism, fed to us by the right red hand of unelected prime ministers. Despite this, we have the audacity to call our country ‘Great’. So we ask you, ‘Are you sure?’” They added: “We could deep dive into inspirations and influences- but the songs about politics, not us. We hope the song speaks for itself...."    0:27:29 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Shelf Lives  Where Did I Go?   Favoriting Where Did I Go? Single  Not Sorry Mom  2024  Following a string of ace singles, Shelf Lives have just announced a brand-new four-track EP. Entitled No Idea, the record is out on October 23, and it was named as such because, as Shelf Lives relatably admit, “Generally, we have no idea what we’re doing, what the point is, what’s going on at the time, what to call this EP…” They stress that, “We don’t feel alone, though. No-one has a clue or any real control. We’ve been led to focus on finding and living an external purpose that should make us happy. We think we know what’s right for the world and what isn’t. We think we know what’s ‘cool’ and what isn’t. We think we know what harmony is and how to achieve it. “In reality, we’re too busy with surviving the dumpster fire that is our social system to know anything, but we always have hope and silver linings to keep us laughing, and we will. No Idea is a symbolic throwing in of the towel. If no-one knows then, ‘Who cares?’ It can be seemingly intense at first but in the end, it’s liberating.”  *   0:29:41 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Exit Group  The Butcher   Favoriting Adverse Habitat  Castle Face  2018  From the dank warehouse recesses that brought us Useless Eaters and Dry Erase, Castle Face introduces Exit Group-sharply futuristic post-punk with a pissed-off lean, antisocial lyrics spit over an abnormally locked-in guitar/bass/drums triangle, wound up tighter than a Swiss watch. Post-everything sample tweakery and chrome-dipped guitar tonality lend a darkly robotic sheen, abraded riffs pop up everywhere but where you think they should be, clanging and clanking inhumanly around elaborate Rube Goldberg patterns, tessellating under flickering municipal neon. Adverse Habitat is bone-dry furious, turning on a dime just to slap the drink out of your hand. "A thrilling disaster I can't wait to witness first hand." -Marc Riley.    0:31:48 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Rudolf Abramov  Clonex   Favoriting Paracetemol/Clonex  Höga Nord Rekords  2022  Rudolf Abramov is a duo based in Berlin. They seem to open a door to unexpected musical encounters. It's an almost impossible task to sum up their sound in a comprehensible way, but in their own words their music is 'a response to a seemingly endless conflict about disgust, acceptance and love."    0:34:15 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Leaders  I Am Not a Nixon   Favoriting Horrendous New Wave Comp  Lumpy Records  2017  Horrendous New Wave, a compilation that according to the notes, celebrates, “16 no name new wave bands from the minds of many celebrated cretins across America and beyond.” Released on Fish records, a sub label of Lumpy that is run by Martin Meyer of Lumpy and the Dumpers and BB Eye, the comp presents tracks from the likes of Ausmuteants’ Jake Robertson, Cody Phifer of HairLong n Freeky and Nosferatu, and Rik of Rik and the Pigs and Mongoloid fame. To be honest I’m not sure if these acts even exist outside of their appearance on the comp...and that is ok.    0:38:00 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Bobby Conn  No Kids, No Money   Favoriting Bobby Conn  Fire Records  2010  Wow. This epic tune is...pretty much everything. Don't fuck with the childless cat ladies, because this is our new anthem. Bobby Conn has outrageously claimed to be many things...including the antichrist...In more recent years, Conn has been more candid in interviews, and has admitted that all of these early fabrications for the press were merely a charade. Conn told Magnet magazine that "I always thought it was part of the creative process. Creativity is lying. My own story doesn't seem very interesting to me [...] You don't want to be who you are onstage everyday. What's the point in that?" One thing he is truthful to is a commitment to is using his art as a platform for social and political commentary. "All the records that I've done are a critique of what's going on in contemporary America...I've always done lots of social commentary that I believe in pretty strongly but I am very uncomfortable with the role of the artist as a meaningful social critic...my whole generation [is] a confused group of people with an ambivalent way of dealing with protest."    0:41:31 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Bill Callahan  Drover   Favoriting Apocalypse  Drag City Inc.  2011  This opening song from the studio album 'Apocalypse' clips along at good pace, almost bright, augmented by some lively fiddle, but burbling with sinister darkness and all around the edges and spaces. Bill Callahan has always had that edge, from his Smog days to his self-named solo days. This is what draws me to him... Moreso than most singery-songwriters. "Apocalypse is a studio album by Bill Callahan, released on April 5, 2011. It is the third studio album released under his own name, and fourteenth overall when including LPs released as Smog." //// def. -- Drover: "(especially in the past) someone whose job is moving groups of animals, especially cattle or sheep, from one place to another:" //// Oh, huh, also --- ""Drover" features prominently in the final episode of the 2018 documentary series Wild Wild Country, the title of which is drawn from the song's chorus. His song "America" also plays during the credits of Episode 1." --- (A fact I was not aware of until we just played it a few minutes ago.)    1:00:55 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Bill Callahan  Drover (Live)   Favoriting Resuscitate!  Drag City Inc.  2024  Released July 26, 2024. This live version of Drover sets the pace & scene from the outset, slower, heavier, guitars upfront, at times burbling over to howling feedback swells. The jaunty fiddle is replaced with an almost mournful saxophone. The instrumental breaks get a more intense and freeform workout. Two different sides of the same song. I am endlessly intrigued by the versions and re-imaginings. This fits the Bill nicely. (Pun now intented.) -- His bandcamp page explains, helpfully: ""Callahan comes alive in Chicago, with Jim White, Matt Kinsey and special guests Nick Mazzarella, Pascal Kerong'A, Nathaniel Ballinger and Natural Information Society’s Joshua Abrams & Lisa Alvarado. Why, Bill? “Songs tend to mutate after they've been recorded. These songs were mutating faster than usual. Like whatever happened to Bruce Banner in the lab – I knew these songs were about to get superpowers… this change needed to be documented.”" https://billcallahan.bandcamp.com/  *   1:05:21 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Osees  Termination Officer (LIVE)   Favoriting SORCS 80 LIVE BONUS ALBUM  Castleface Records  2024  Released in super limited versions alongside the studio version of the album, both this Aug 2024, a live version of the album from the top of a building, on a helipad, in Downtown L.A. --- Stripped away are the extra saxophones (baritone and tenor) that adorn many of the studio album's tracks (including this one.) The result is often rawer, samplers to the fore, battling it out to overtake the compositions at any opportunity. To see the video is revelatory, as always, Osees are near unparalleled in their supreme excellence. OSEES SORCS 80 LIVE HELIPAD DTLA  *   1:12:15 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Osees  Termination Officer   Favoriting SORCS 80  Castleface Records  2024  Full band + saxophones studio version, as released August 9, 2024. The saxophones add some depth and richness to the tracks on this album, weaving in and out amongst the samplers to accentuate the melodies within the damaged electronics that lead the way through this phase of the ever amorphous Osees. John Dwyer explains in an interview with retrofuturista: "Sorcs 80 harkens back to my childhood, particularly gaming. We often have references to this kind of thing in our band because it was such an influential part of my childhood. Before I got into music, I was really into role-playing games, sci-fi, and fantasy novels. /// / Sorc is short for Sorcerer, which is referenced in titles of albums by Jack DeJohnette and Miles Davis that I’m a big fan of. The 80 is a reference to a year, a definitive year in my life when I was six years old and learning all these cool things – a simpler time, I guess. //// As far as the instrumentation of the record goes, we just wanted to have a challenge and try something new. I’ve been into changing it up more than usual lately. For instance, A Foul Form featured Tom Dolis, my keyboard player, playing guitar with me, and there was hardly any synthesizer or keys on the record. The previous record was very synthesizer-heavy. So I thought since we had done both of those things, we could pivot and do something really strange and new." ///// https://ohsees.bandcamp.com/  *   1:14:57 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Buddy Wynkoop  Relatable   Favoriting Relatable Single  Joy Inc.  2023  Why has nobody played this? Why is it so good?! Buddy Wynkoop is a 4 piece art punk outfit that combines a barrage of spoken word existentialism, shout-sung melodies and a unique approach to structure. It's the keyboard and vocals that makes this song for me, completely. Formed in the summer of 2019 in a basement in Portland, Or. GREAT NEWS...they've released two more singles in 2024. Also they look like very nice people in their band photo.    1:23:48 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Steak Blake  I Lie See   Favoriting This One EP  Just Step Sideways  2024  The EP showcases six tracks that channel Steak Blake's experiences and his reflections on modern existence through a mix of angular guitars, dynamic vocals, and introspective lyricism. Produced by Rob Slater, renowned for his work with Yard Act and Thank, "This One" delivers a sound that is both raw and refined, recorded in the same practical, intimate settings that birthed Steak Blake’s solo journey. He is from London, UK. released June 28, 2024  *   1:26:10 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Telehealth  Idiot Proof (nO SoUp Du JoUr)   Favoriting Content Oscillator  Very Famous  2023  Telehealth, out of the Seattle suburbs, makes retro-futurist new wave songs out of cheesy synths and drum machines, resuscitating the nostalgic sounds of Devo, the Human League and Eddy Grant, while critiquing the cutting-edge technologies of right this minute. Alexander Attitude and Kendra Cox of Lemolo are the brains behind this. Are they devo-tees...I bet my spuds on it! I actuallly find this fun and fascinating as an amalgam of every DEVO riff and lyric. 9/10 in excellence.    1:28:51 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Johnny Teardrop  Secret Death   Favoriting No Problemo  Rouge Mécanique  2017  "No Problemo" is Jonny Teardrop’s first physical album release. Inspired by Native American peyote songs, using his Jaguar as a bass, drum samples from obscure Japanese crust punk songs, Jonny Teardrop charges through 13 brief songs snapping audible polaroids and conjuring fragments of memories. Jonny Teardrop hails from Hinkley, California and has not been active since 2017.    1:32:38 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Pig Frenzy  Ants   Favoriting Hogtied  Pig Frenzy  2019  Continuing with the nervy and agitated theme...we present this tune. Pig Frenzy is a Rotterdam-based (post)punk formation. Having evolved from the industrial harbour city, the unpolished underground scene is in the band's DNA. In their short existence they have gained national and international following, having toured throughout Europe - receiving acclaim for their wild and unpredictable live shows. Let's all get unhinged, shall we? Again, no releases since then...where's a pig frenzy when you need one?!    1:34:10 (MP3 | Pop-up)
Threat.Meet.Protocol.  Insomnia   Favoriting Mindless Consumption      This song wins because it is soft loud, has a great organ sound, plus TMP is the best band name I've seen in a while. They are from Tauranga, New Zealand, and this explains a lot. There are FALL references in their song and album titles. This is even better. They cite "The musical paradigm of diminishing returns..." in their bio. I LOVE THIS BAND.    1:36:33 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Society of Mystic Friends  Washed Up Magic Man   Favoriting Corridors of Destiny Comp  gare du nord  2024  This is the second time I'm playing this band this week, the first time being their AMAZING cover of the "Are You Being Served?" TV theme song. It is FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE to understand who or what is behind this music...as it is presented as a compilation with various artists (and likely is some kind of collaborative), someone named Toni Tubna is mentioned as an inspiration and main collaborator, yet the release is attributed to Papernut Cambridge from Folkestone, UK....with then the following: Kent based project formed by Ian Button - formerly guitarist with Death In Vegas, Thrashing Doves and many others, now prolific underground producer/writer (Go-Kart Mozart etc...) and co-founder of Gare du Nord Records in 2013. I am so confused. No matter.  *   1:38:30 (MP3 | Pop-up)
The Wolfgang Press  Sad Surfer   Favoriting Sad Surfer Single  Downwards  2024  “Sad Surfer,” the first new Wolfgang Press track in 28 years, is built on an off-kilter drum-machine beat, and it’s got smears of guitar and a vocal that implies barely-contained fury. “Sad Surfer” is one of the first songs written for the album and references the Victorian painter Richard Dadd, who painted imagined landscapes populated by fairies and supernatural beings. Dadd killed his father, convinced he was the devil, and thereafter spent most of his life painting in Bethlem and Broadmoor hospitals."  *   1:42:00 (MP3 | Pop-up)

Unrest  West Coast Love Affair   Favoriting Perfect Teeth  Teen Beat / 4AD  1993  "Unrest was an indie rock band from the Washington, D.C., area. It was one of Mark Robinson's projects for what would eventually become the TeenBeat label, also created by Robinson while in high school. Developing from an experimental approach of never playing the same song twice, earlier material seemed to be influenced by everything from punk to funk to Ennio Morricone. Original members Robinson (guitar) and drummer Philip Krauth were joined by Bridget Cross on bass in 1990 and their sound evolved into a minimalist but lively kind of pop. The two full-length albums released with this line up, 1992's Imperial f.f.r.r. and 1993's Perfect Teeth (distributed by the influential British label 4AD Records) featured pop songs interspersed with avant-garde percussive and sonic tracks, sometimes featuring nothing but white noise, beeps or sirens. EPs released around the same time period reveal a more pronounced gap between pop and experimental elements. The group broke up in 1994 with Krauth pursuing a solo career and Robinson and Cross continued for a time as Air Miami, which released two singles and one album, me me me. Since Air Miami's demise in the mid '90s, Robinson has continued to release various solo projects, as well as albums with his bands Cotton Candy and Flin Flon, and continues to run the TeenBeat label as well."    1:53:53 (MP3 | Pop-up)
