It's actually tough to call it stealing (of the blues songs); blues players stole licks, lyrics all the time. The difference is the amount of money the white bluesmen made off it (woulda been nice if they shared).

yeah that's really it. before "bluesrock" they often gave proper credit; and often didn't...but they were only going to make a few bucks, at most, from it anyway - so it was just "tradition" -to re-use lines and phrases indefinitely.

I assumed that the exclamation point part might have been part of a copyright dispute settlement, but I might be wrong.

i know the song. yes the 'stones changed it a lot; as led zeppelin did "bring it on home"... in which case "written by.../arranged by..." would be in order, in my opinion.
- or at least a writing credit shared by all involved.
...or, written by Jagger/Richards, inspired by the traditional song, ...

One thinks of no less than MuddyWaters saying to the Stones - you took my Music - but gave me my Name.
If similar things happened with Zeppelin - it was along a much more convoluted path... Might we say ?
& there was 'borrowing' from immediate contemporaries like the SmallFaces ...who in turn 'borrowed' from U.S. R&B sources like they all did of course...

yes. it wasn't just the 'stones and led zeppelin. but cream, for instants, generally, maybe always, gave credit where due -to the best of their knowledge.
-one thing that stands out too, for me anyway, is that the 'stones often, but not always, gave themselves full writing credit for old blues songs; but they (often but not always) made them their own. (still should just have an "arranged by-" credit)
-whereas 'zeppeling often straight-up stole *the song*... the music, lyrics AND style. particularly robert plant, who outright mimicked Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin Wolf, Jake Holmes, etc.
