Listener Handy Haversack used to greet Bryce's raga shows with "raga against the dying of the light". It's kinda the opposite sentiment here with Sunrise Lamentations

when people here invoke the port authority they're usually referring to the bus terminal which poxes may indeed be afraid of....a slice of pre-bloomberg nyc

A thing they do randomly with some frequency-they ran the A on the F line so I ended up getting to the station 45 minutes later than intended.

The Paris equivalent is called RATP, which is widely known to mean "rentre avec tes pieds" which translates to "just walk home"
Avatar 3:39am
tom tom the pipers son:

......pox-worthy....

i believe that stat of 48% of bus riders not paying fare because i've witnessed it in the reals....seems folks are conveniently forgetting to pay since the buses were free during the pandemic...there was talk of the buses going free permanently a couple of years ago but haven't heard a peep about that recently

Ha! I used to take the RER B to Sevran-Livey when I lived there for a brief summer a million years ago.
Avatar 3:42am
tom tom the pipers son:

the fare evasion is either convenient amnesia or not giving a shit since the top 1% don't pay their "fare"...imo

↳ tom tom the pipers son @3:39
I'm the only person in the 5 boroughs that pays for the bus I'm pretty sure. People don't even pretend. They should figure out a way to just make it free.

I beat the fare for several months because one of the machines stole $20 cash from me and the agent was like "sorry". So I made my money back and then some.

It used to work pretty well at a time (at least compared to my original C line). Now it's a total mess, so I take a bus or walk, at least that takes a predictable time (the C remains worse though)

this is my metropolitan diary of yesterday... young woman gets on bus with two screaming boys pre school aged. sit in seats in front of me still yelling. all of a sudden i'm hit with something hard on the side of my head. i look down and see it's a cell phone. the mother picks it up and says "thank you" to me (?) then she says"they're not bad kids. they're autistic...retarded." "they're fighting and one bit the other one" "when he bites me, i have to remember not to hit him" i didn't know what to say to a young mother with two autistic children so i said "i feel for you" to which she responded "i feel for me"

Whoa that's a lot. I feel for her but she called her own kids retarded?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:33am
coelacanth∅:

it has always seemed to me that a person can be mentally retarded, or autistic; but i've never heard of both together. it doesn't even make sense to me -given that autistic people tend to have some fairly brilliant ideas going on inside.
...maybe she assumes people don't know what autism is so she says "retarded" to dummy it down for people?
...in any case she doesn't seem like she can handle the job she's sadly been bestowed with.

my mother knew i guy with an autistic son he'd have on weekends. the boy was very smart and curious but of course some people would assume otherwise because he never spoke, not a word, up to that point... ~7 years old. the guy would take him to see all kinds of places -museums, parks, abandoned structures... his thing was climbing...and there was seemingly nothing he couldn't climb, apparently very quickly.
i can imagine how scary that would've got sometimes!

It's interesting how views oa autism have changed. It seems that a lot of my friends have been diagnosed along the spectrum somewhere, but none corresponding to what people thought of as autistic 40, 50 years ago. Maybe the film "Rain Man" hasn't aged so well
