	1:45pm Rich in Washington: I'm pretty sure the first record I bought with my own money was The Crazy World Of Arthur Brown, found at a Salvation Army for a quarter. I remember buying it because the song Fire really did it for me when it was played a lot on the radio when I was very young.

	1:55pm Dean: For Christmas I asked for Zubin Mehta's LA Philharmonic performance of Holst's The Planets. It is a killer album, supremely well recorded. And everybody is nude and covered in body paint.

	2:12pm spodiodi: my first crush, since second grade, Carrie Rota, inspired my first purchases, on a trip to Sears, of Van Halen's debut album and their Diver Down lp. her older brother (with the sweet Chevelle turned her onto them, and since my failed attempt to impress her with a chocolate easter bunny (led only to merciless teasing from my friends) -- i saw becoming a VH fan as another chance (sure, i liked plenty of their music at the time too). prior to that i listened to mostly my mom's albums and before that, a ton of old 45's at my grandmom's (from aunts and uncle, plus some older records from my grandparent's collection), and their next door neighbors the father of that family had a bunch of similarly old recordings, that the kid my age and i would play -- don't know hoe many hours we spent laughing along to "Shaving Cream" (not getting the joke, but loving it anyway). got my first Monkees album for xmas at age 5 (big love for them), and had that disney album w/disco duck, watch out for goofy, etc.

And Boyd, well, I'm glad he's written the book as his subject matter expertise is just staggering. Particularly liked his story of sitting round the campfire with Tuareg musicians in the Mail desert and asking what inspired and influenced them, to be told Dire Straits.

I strolled out to find Ton Koopman standing on the walk. I'd seen him not long before at a friend's house in the Hollywood Hills. He was performing that evening at the Sheldonian Theatre with London Baroque. Naturally, I had to attend.

I'd say we're both richer for the experiences. :) ... the teasing continued from second grade right up until eighth -- and then on into HS. never did end up getting closer to her, but we were casually friendly toward each other. the teasing was mostly in the format of my friends asking me over and over if i was going to "pop the question (, spodi)", and ask her out. but they would utter that phrase loudly without using her name. usually while we were playing some coed kind of sport, like touch/flag football or so. i never did. she was replaced byThe Goddess -- who i couldn't stop drawing pictures of. never got with The Goddess either, though i probably got teased more. :) and The Goddess's friends at least thought i was was something special, even if she never got it :) -- ran into her for a few years with the same set of friends at parties, etc, until i blew that popsicle stand and began heading west (in a roundabout way) --- there was also my in-between crush who kept telling me she was busy washing her hair the times i asked her out. (haha) ... i'm stronger from the experience (and had my fair share of attention) . and i moved on from vh to lingo bingo (and never stopped being a superfan). brings me great joy having heard them a lot more (everywhere, including here at wfmu) during the past few years. i wanted to have a radio station/show devoted to OB. Nothing But Boingo my mother always had whatever radio station on too. i get that from her. the WFMU DJS deliver an endless supply of music worth loving (!)

	1:55pm Dean: For Christmas I asked for Zubin Mehta's LA Philharmonic performance of Holst's The Planets. It is a killer album, supremely well recorded. And everybody is nude and covered in body paint.

	2:12pm spodiodi: my first crush, since second grade, Carrie Rota, inspired my first purchases, on a trip to Sears, of Van Halen's debut album and their Diver Down lp. her older brother (with the sweet Chevelle turned her onto them, and since my failed attempt to impress her with a chocolate easter bunny (led only to merciless teasing from my friends) -- i saw becoming a VH fan as another chance (sure, i liked plenty of their music at the time too). prior to that i listened to mostly my mom's albums and before that, a ton of old 45's at my grandmom's (from aunts and uncle, plus some older records from my grandparent's collection), and their next door neighbors the father of that family had a bunch of similarly old recordings, that the kid my age and i would play -- don't know hoe many hours we spent laughing along to "Shaving Cream" (not getting the joke, but loving it anyway). got my first Monkees album for xmas at age 5 (big love for them), and had that disney album w/disco duck, watch out for goofy, etc.

And Boyd, well, I'm glad he's written the book as his subject matter expertise is just staggering. Particularly liked his story of sitting round the campfire with Tuareg musicians in the Mail desert and asking what inspired and influenced them, to be told Dire Straits.

I strolled out to find Ton Koopman standing on the walk. I'd seen him not long before at a friend's house in the Hollywood Hills. He was performing that evening at the Sheldonian Theatre with London Baroque. Naturally, I had to attend.

I'd say we're both richer for the experiences. :) ... the teasing continued from second grade right up until eighth -- and then on into HS. never did end up getting closer to her, but we were casually friendly toward each other. the teasing was mostly in the format of my friends asking me over and over if i was going to "pop the question (, spodi)", and ask her out. but they would utter that phrase loudly without using her name. usually while we were playing some coed kind of sport, like touch/flag football or so. i never did. she was replaced byThe Goddess -- who i couldn't stop drawing pictures of. never got with The Goddess either, though i probably got teased more. :) and The Goddess's friends at least thought i was was something special, even if she never got it :) -- ran into her for a few years with the same set of friends at parties, etc, until i blew that popsicle stand and began heading west (in a roundabout way) --- there was also my in-between crush who kept telling me she was busy washing her hair the times i asked her out. (haha) ... i'm stronger from the experience (and had my fair share of attention) . and i moved on from vh to lingo bingo (and never stopped being a superfan). brings me great joy having heard them a lot more (everywhere, including here at wfmu) during the past few years. i wanted to have a radio station/show devoted to OB. Nothing But Boingo my mother always had whatever radio station on too. i get that from her. the WFMU DJS deliver an endless supply of music worth loving (!)
