A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

At the Holzer exhibition, all her pieces had only the title, materials, and date posted. And then many (most) had "scan to learn more" QR codes, which we of course could not (and would not) use. We wondered if maybe because her work has so much text in it, she did not want more text on the walls to compete for or drain attention. Which I get, but it would be nice if a museum were one place where people aren't glued to their damn phones.

The permanent collection pieces did not do such.

I’d include Koons in my curriculum, if I were teaching. His position, post-Warhol, is important; He’s never portrayed himself as anything other than the vacuum left behind once capital ($) co-opts all prior notions of value in a commodity that was a bit of magical thinking in the first place, I.e. Art. He’s the living end of all things romantic. History, like art, needs to acknowledge changing contexts, lest it become yet another religion. Koons is right, if you can stomach that, and the banal marketing of his hyper-kitsch bears out the truth of the death of art as we imagined it to be….unless we can stand outside and look back into it, from out there somewhere where things are NOT known. The grand tour is so much richer if you’re not shopping.

I think posted text at museums and exhibits should ID the writer/curator, and perhaps have more than one take, more than one artsplainer, on a piece. The declarative certainties, and, as far as we can tell, presumptions, about themes and meanings in those wall words are often tedious and usually unsupported by any cited artist input.

When I still cared about who was hot, Jeff Koons was hard to avoid. I saw the whisky train at Reagan Projects in L.A. in the early '80's. A few years later the world premier of the chrome bunny in New York at Anita Noesi(sp). And after that, his paint factory photo realism that borrows heavily from James Rosenquist at Larry Gagosian back in L.A.

What can I say, you need energy to drive around and to all these white cubes to take in these creations by committee.

No critical ideology, just not interested anymore.
