Like theater companies. Nobody asks, what happened to that group that used to put on plays? They just assume actors, directors, etc. come and go, re-assorting from time to time. People don't expect the entity to stay together and maintain its identity.

I never thought much before about the subject of persistence of bands, but now, come to think of it, I wonder how some bands have managed to stay together for so long, changing maybe one member at a time, and then not even frequently. Like, are they so hard to get along with that they have trouble working with anyone else? Often the individuals have an extensive history bouncing frequently from group to group until THIS band formed, so maybe that's evidence of being hard to find others they can work with over the long run, so once they find each other they're afraid to break up.

Listener Robert, my long-defunct band (Songs from a Random House) was together for 20 years. A solid commitment to a musical vision can often override internal tensions. Doesn’t make day-to-day interactions any easier, though.

Think we can assume their music was supposed to be annoying to adults in the audience?

I keep thinking about a TV commercial for Sanka in which a mother was host to practice for a band her child had assembled. They lyrics were, "Heavy, heavy...you are so heavy...very heavy...oh woah-o-o-o-o. The last bit of it was when the sousaphonist entered.

If my little experience as an extra in a movie of Damon Lindelof's is typical, that means there was probably plenty of unfilmed rehearsal wherein they made up a real, albeit temporary, band, probably more fun than the shooting for Sanka. But they would've been directed to be super annoying.

Listener Robert, we didn’t tour much, so nearly all of the other players were in multiple groups at any given time. Pretty common for NYC bands, I’d say.

The Sanka ad managed to have the drum beating 5 while the rest of them did 4. Peter Schickele could not have composed a more intentionally unmusical piece. And TV commercials are HIGHLY produced pieces.

I met Phil Schapp once-I co-hosted a morning show on WKCR (with Sid Gribbetz, who still does a show there). Schapp would come in to do Bird Flight at 8:20 AM. He demonstrated his photographic memory-my last name is Skowron; he proceded to spout statistics and other information about the former Yankee 1st baseman, Bill "Moose" Skowron. Tons more than I ever knew...

Wow! All these years I actually never knew how he got the nickname (assumed it had to do with him being powerful). It was an interesting nickname for me (kids in High School did call me Moose), as I was the skinniest kid you'd ever see).

Early in the pandemic, I called in to WKCR to thank DJ Sid Gribbetz for being there and going on playing the music. He picked up, said, “It’s your dime,” heard my thank-you, and was off the phone in a needle-drop. A far cry from the WFMU message board experience! I still listen to his show when I happen to catch it.

I've seen King Crimson several times (mostly early gigs), so for me this will be quite different without Fripp in the house. I'm limited to first two songs for photography, so hoping to just enjoy listening to the rest of the show after packing away my equipment.
