Favoriting September 12, 2024: AUBREY PLAZA! WILL FERRELL! REALITY WINNER! HAIR METAL! RINGO STARR!
LIVE from Los Angeles: This week we'll be looking at three fantastic new films. First up... MY OLD ASS stars Maisy Stella as a high school senior who's ready to blow out of town and leave it all behind until a mushroom trip brings her face to face with her 39 year-old self played by Aubrey Plaza. Then we have an incredibly moving documentary about acceptance. WILL & HARPER examines the friendship between Will Ferrell and Harper Steele a former SNL writer who has transitioned late in life to a woman, as they take a coast to coast road trip together. Our third film is WINNER starring Zach Galifianakis, Connie Britton and Emilia Jones (CODA) as Reality Winner. This Biopic is about the whistleblower who confirmed to the world that Russia was in fact meddling in the 2016 election and then went to prison for it. On TV next week comes Nöthin' But A Good Time: The Uncensored Story of '80S Hair Metal to Paramount+. This 3 part docu series takes us from the birth of hair metal to its heyday and then its ultimate demise with hysterical interviews, fun animation and ridiculous uncensored footage of this ridiculously debaucherous time in music. Finally we're going back to the Greek for a perfect end of summer concert: Ringo Starr and His All Star Band featuring members of Men At Work, Toto and Average White Band. All that plus more!

Hello dear sir Barth. I have been taken by the consumption for two weeks and was even too ill to listen to your program. I am still in recovery, in my sick bed, but today I can listen!

Slash, for all of his fame, seems to me to be mostly unappreciated as a guitarist. I think he's pretty damn talented.

I think the guy is crazy talented. I really liked his last album. I missed seeing him this summer but I would love to. Thanksa for stopping in Dean

Thanks for affording the place to stop!

I never got the Pacific NW "grunge" thing, can't bear Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots... But Velvet Revolver with Weiland, man, what a missed opportunity and a loss.

So, is a so-called hair metal rock documentary a cock rock rock doc?

Ah, I hadn't considered that, but I can't dispute it! Site of Neil Diamond's Hot August Night.

Best LA venue I know, which has perhaps changed since I last heard a show there, is the Japan America Theater (now named something else). It now has a different brand, but the Green Umbrella shows I attended there were marvels.
  11:53pm
Dean:

John Anson Ford Theater, too, is a blast for summer and other temperate weather shows.

Oh, wow! That's great. We used to go regularly for classical shows. We'd bring cornucopias of picnic fare and share it with the chefs at the venue. Drank way too much, but good, good times.

I thought it must be Lukather. That guy is amazing. Are you familiar with the yacht rock podcast/YouTube series guys? Some great ou're music nerd shit. Anyhow through them I have gained a great understanding of "personnel" from that era and Lukather is just WOW.
  12:02am

Slightly OT, but I really need to hear again Ringo's old solo albums, Sentimental Journey and Beaucoups of Blues. Nothing like that next sequence, but worth dipping in again.

Masters of the lost art of the melody.
  12:45am
Dean:

You're on to something, Bob. Melody has suffered in recent years. Being an old fogey, I am a fan of Monteverdi, Purcell, Mozart, Schubert, Beethoven, and so forth. Jimmy Webb, Burt Bacharach, Laura Nyro bring us into the present.

We are now regaled with remarkable demonstrations of music not centered on the melodic. And not all are bad! For example, I adore (even crave) Cardi B. Zero melody. 200% talent.
Avatar 12:47am
Bob Barth:

↳ Dean @12:45
Even rap used to be way more melodic then it is now with few exceptions.
  12:53am
Dean:

Another OT that I hope makes a good point:

I visited my dentist this morning for a filling. While she drilled she asked me if everything was okay, if I needed ear plugs due to the noise. My reply was, "In fact, I love the noise. I collect records that sound like the drilling." And I do. To prove my point, I forwarded to her office a link to a beautiful recording of Iannis Xenakis' Persepolis, which at certain points does in fact sound like having one's teeth drilled.

Melody? Zero. Music? Nothing other than.
