In Camden, Maine, the other day, when one of the small schooners returned from one of its tourist day trips, the captain and a crew member were on deck folding blankets and blankets and blankets after passengers had disembarked. Nice day, but no doubt a little brisk sailing out on Penobscot Bay.

Got a ride over the summer as a birthday present, out of Camden on a vintage wooden schooner that used to be a private yacht -- nice boat, gorgeous day. Don't know if we'll do it, but girlfriend and I have wondered how the luck goes when you take a trip on a bigger schooner for four days. Fantastic potential to be stirred by wind, sea and islands and by character of vessel, but a crap-shoot, trapped on a boat with a number of what types of other guests/strangers -- goofballs, irritants, mansplainers? Boat reps should measure and screen tastes, tolerances and degrees of misanthropy to compose compatible-passenger lists.

This song has 52 clicky-stars next to it. That might be the most I've ever seen next to a song on a WFMU playlist.

@Kevin-san Hi Kevin. I had a blast, thanks. Rode out a storm under canvas at the top of the world's biggest canyon, with a view of the Chinese border, searched and found the legendary wild tulips of the Tian Shan mountains, ate horse stew with villagers, crossed the Kyzylkum desert by train in Uzbekistan and discovered local brews and many great bars. Those were some of the highlights.

i just read that "gothic rock" was applied to the doors in 1967! i knew it'd been described as goth but i thought it was decades later, after it had already been applied to bauhaus and siouxsie & the banshees.
...i never heard it used until the early 80s, after "gothic rock" was used to describe these later bands...not as a style or "genre" but just to describe them.
now i wonder if that journalist was applying the term he'd heard before, or thought he was inventing it himself...

@Kevin-san You're right about the food unless you're a fan of grilled meat, but the land and the people were amazing. My favourite country was Kyrgyzstan. Imagine Switzerland sixty years ago. Clean, unspoilt and very friendly.

@Hubig Pie Hi Hubig
I think the Charyn Canyon in Kazakhstan, where I was, claims to be the longest, which may or may not be the case. However, it was impressive. My pal and I started out first light and trekked a fair length before we turned back worried we were getting too close to the Chinese border. We saw only wildlife. It was amazing.
