Possibly named after a variety of acid made by chemist Owsley Stanley (though it was also the name of a laundry detergent), Blue Cheer originally formed in 1966 as a 5 piece, but supposedly decided to trim down the roster to a trio after witnessing Jimi Hendrix’s set at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967. It was this lineup of Dickie Peterson (bass/vocals), Leigh Stephens (guitar), and Paul Whaley that would record both their debut album β€œVincebus Eruptum” and the follow-up β€œOutsideinside”; both released in 1968. Their version of Eddie Cochran’s β€œSummertime Blues” hit #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that year. β€œOutsideinside” was aptly named as the album was recorded both outdoors and indoors at various locations.

After the release of β€œOutsideinside”, Leigh Stephens was asked to leave the band after a disagreement about drug use (Stephens was not into the scene). He then went on to record his first solo LP, β€œRed Weather” in London, which was released in 1969. The album features both Ian Stewart and Nicky Hopkins on keyboards.

Randy Holden, formerly of Sons Of Adams and The Other Half, was Leigh Stephen’s replacement on guitar. However, his stint in the band was short-lived. He unexpectedly left the band mid-way through the recording sessions of 1969’s β€œNew! Improved! Blue Cheer”. He is featured on guitar and vocals on Side 2 of that album. Bruce Stephens (formerly of Mint Tattoo and no relation to Leigh) wound up joining along with Ralph Burns Kellogg (keyboards) and the recording of the album was finished. He’d also later wind up forming Pilot with Leigh Stephens in 1971.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:30pm
Frank In Queens:

After leaving Blue Cheer, Randy Holden teamed up with drummer/keyboard player Chris Lockheed to form the duo β€œPopulation II”. They recorded and released the β€œPopulation II” album in 1970. However, issues with the album led to the unfortunate bankruptcy of Holden and his departure from the music industry for over 20 years. His comeback came in 1994 with the recording of the β€œGuitar God” album, and has released new material sporadically since then.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:35pm

Silver Metre was formed in 1969 by Leigh Stephens as a result of the sessions for β€œRed Weather”. The band featured ex-Jeff Beck Group drummer Micky Waller, bassist Pete Sears, and vocalist Jack Reynolds, They released a self-titled album but it went largely unnoticed. He then formed Pilot in 1971 with Waller, Bruce Stephens, Martin Quittenton (guitar), and Neville Whitehead (bass). They also released a self-titled album that same year, but it too did failed to connect with the public. Stephens finally recorded a second solo LP, β€œAnd A Cast Of Thousands” that same year with members of Pilot, the trio Ashton, Gardner, and Dyke, Glen Cornick (ex-Jethro Tull), and reed players Dave Quincy and Dick Morrisey from If. He’s stayed somewhat active in the music scene through the early 2000s, but also works as a graphic artist and studio photographer.

Prior to recording their 4th s/t LP in 1969, drummer Paul Whaley was replaced by Norman Mayell in Blue Cheer. The sound of the band is noticeably different from this point forward; a less heavy, more commercial rock sound. Following the release of the album, Bruce Stephens left the band and was replaced with Gary Lee Yoder. The lineup of Peterson, Yoder, Mayell and Kellogg would remain together for the next two albums until the band initially called it quits in 1971.

Dickie Peterson made several attempts to reboot the band beginning in 1974, including relocating to Germany in the early 1990s and trying there, but none of them particularly lasted very long. But starting in 1999, Peterson along with drummer Paul Whaley and guitarist Andrew β€œDuck” MacDonald finally was finally able to go on a sustained run of touring and recording until Peterson’s death in 2009 at the age of 63 from prostate cancer. The founding member and only constant member through their initial 6 album run from 1968-1971, simply put, Dickie Peterson IS Blue Cheer.
