Favoriting October 7, 2024: FDL515 - Sabre Dance Fun

"Sabre Dance" was composed in 1942 by Aram Khachaturian as a finale for his ballet Gayane, where the dancers display their skill with sabres. Right from it’s birth it has been adapted and popularized many times. From the more than 100 different approaches to this classic that can be found online, Jan Turkenburg handpicked the finest for you and mixed them into a two hour special. More at wikipedia.

Hallo Jan Turkenburg! Hallo allemaal! Aram Khachaturian is a great Armenian hero! We grew up listening to his music in my house. I could sing along to the saber dance before I could sing along to church hymns

I was looking on Wikipedia, curious, since this was composed during "modern" copyright law period, if there were any special ins and outs of the many recordings and variations, covers, etc. made. Have seen no mention of that.

There was not enough time to play all interesting versions and not enough of those to do a second show, but I'm thinking of creating a sabre segment in a following episode.
🦝 Swag For Life Member 2:07pm
WR:

I'm fairly sure I first heard the sabre dance via some cartoons, but it may have just been a short quote of theme or phrase.

One point mentioned on the Wiki page, it was widely used by circus and novelty acts during performances, like jugglers or acrobats. So many people (like me in small town west Texas) would hear it on something like the Ed Sullivan TV show.
