Favoriting October 14, 2024: A steady stream of singles.

Irene's Slew of Singles

Ever since my dad brought me The Beatles' "Help!" on a picture sleeve 45 r.p.m. disc, I've collected boxes full of the 7-inch discs that were so affordable in my early listening explorations. Sadly, that picture sleeve is gone, but the music isn't. Here's my annual airing of the many singles I still treasure.

Of course, it's always right in the hit parade of codger laments -- "Music is so much worse, sounding all the same" -- but some creditable analyses have substantiated a genuine narrowing, a diminishing variety in structure of pop music. No bulletin, no surprise in that. But weighty disappointment.

Indeed, Still...At the same time, there are such great players now and less restraints on the writing, although one could argue that the writing is rather lax maybe because there is really no "record industry" anymore! One would think there would be more hip stuff out there. Irene certainly helps, but how does a new artist compete with millions of other artists all vying for listeners giving the artist 1/4 of a cent per spin! Kinda kooky!

I watched up to the last doctor (Ncuti Gatwa), who I really did like in the role (I liked him better in Sex Education).

Hey Irene, I'm curious for a show like this with so many short change overs, did you plan the set, or are you winging it, or both? Whatever you're doing, it sounds great!

I don't know if Irene is playing them all live (I suspect so, but can't really tell over the interwebs).
Many DJs just do a digital recording of their whole show, they just have to back announce and post on the chat board (technically, since it's all digitized, it shouldn't matter if the little disks are digitized in real time or recorded digitally and broadcast).

Sounds live, Doc. I have a DJ friend who assembles his set, records it and posts it in his time slot. Only time I've heard Irene do anything remotely like that is when she has recorded a band off hours and then plays it on her show later. She has done that for me a few times, as well as DJ'd a band in real time...did that for me, as well. A lot has to do with logistics!

I think you're right (as I mentioned before), Irene will often pull a request from the chat out and play it (try doing that with a pre-recorded playlist)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm
Irene Trudel:

↳ smit @1:39
Well smit, the secret is out. I pre-recorded the vinyl. In past years I've tried to do it live, but it's difficult considering I have one turntalbe in my home studio. But so glad I decided to do it that way for today.

As for live sets, those are mostly pre-recorded, with the exception of the one with Robyn Hitchcock and two other ensembles with simple setups. I have access to a nice studio, so it's a no-brainer to use it.
