As you all know, I have made it a habit of trying to restore the sound on these broadcasts, and this episode is no exception. I did some track separation, EQing, and other bits here and there, to clean this one up as best I could. Fortunately, most Weird Circle episodes sound pretty good, but anything I can do to improve things, I'll happily do.

I never thought of that! I'll have to compare their voices.

I do find these anthology shows, with different stories every week, to be very interesting. Seems like a challenge for a voice actor, to embody so many characters.

This is a particularly bad recording, for The Weird Circle. I did my best to clean it up, and it sounds better. Many of the transition cues in the second half of this episode are gone, or mangled, so I replaced them with other music cues from other episodes of the show. I think it all works, but this one required more repair than the regular episode of The Weird Circle.

Austin Rich:

Stories like this remind me that, for hundreds of years, people would just go about their lives, sick, going to work, meeting people, doing things, as if there was nothing they could do about it.

This back-half of the story has some of the worst sound.

Stan Lee invented Mutants because he was tired of making origin stories involving radiation to make superheroes. This way, he can skip all those radiation accidents.

Even before covid, there was a notable shift in my office culture where, if someone was sick, everyone would bully them to go home and rest, don't get us sick, leave already and get better soon.

That was refreshing compared to the culture of, "of oh, I'm sick too. Wish I could go home." And, "hope you had a good 'sick' day and you're 'feeling better.'"

You can hear, faintly, in the background, another story that is behind this one. Most likely, this episode was recorded onto a tape with another episode of something on behind it. That is one of the things that has muddied the sound in this part of the episode.

It was a change I saw at the same job I'm at now. It was really notable. A huge shift and welcome, too. Now we all work from home and yell on Teams for people to log off and get some rest and heal up.

Most super-heroes have dumb origins, and the idea that people REALLY care about origins is a dubious claim to me. I don't particularly care about Robin Hood's early years. Sherlock Holmes is fine to me without knowing how he got his "powers." It's funny how superheroes have such a different set of narrative conventions.

I certainly went through a Bela Lugosi / Ed Wood period in my 20's, around when a lot of Wood movies were starting to be much easier to find on VHS. These days, I couldn't really tell you the difference between anything that isn't Plan 9. It's like one, huge, bad movie slurry in my head.

"I will create a race of men...a race of atomic superman...who will conquer the world!" Great scene in the Tim Burton film "Ed Wood" with Bela reciting that speech from "Bride of the Monster."

When I started working in law offices in the '90s, I once saw a letter from another firm, and Bela Lugosi Jr. was one of the names on the masthead. Would have loved to have worked for him!

Also once saw a document with Frank Sinatra III on a law firm's masthead. I was like DAMN, those two should have started their own firm. The Law Offices of Sinatra & Lugosi.

It is interesting to hear a story from 1948 about computers that might be alive. Considering our current concerns regarding AI, it's good to know we've been worried about "smart" computers for almost 80 years now.
