Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:04pm
Irene Trudel:

↳ coelacanth∅ @1:58
coel, I honestly don't know the answer to that one. I do own the CD box set reissue but haven't listened that closely. I would think that's the definitive version, but there have been cases--Miles Davis' Kind of Blue comes to mind-- where they discovered the original had been sped up. But I don't know about the Johnson recordings.

Will in Norman:

recording engineers during the 78 era didn't always have ways of measuring the speed of their equipment accurately, especially in the earlier decades. So it's not unusual for '78s' to not be recorded at exactly 78 rpm. in fact, the playback speed of records wasn't really standardized until sometime in the 20s, but most companies recorded within the ballpark of 60~90 rpm before then. on top of that, a lot of engineers would slow down the equipment on purpose to save space or to make the musician's playing sound more fast & impressive when played back at 78

that's why it's always best to use a turntable with pitch adjust when playing 78s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm

↳ Will in Norman @2:08
Thats true! I wonder if there were "test tone" 78s (or 80s or whatever speed was preferred) so people could check pitch with a tuning fork?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:12pm
coelacanth∅:

↳ doctorjazz @2:08
right, true... and i don't really like the title of that article! -"all wrong"!
it's creative license. ...i mean, are we supposed to break down strawberry fields forever into the different parts, which were not all recorded in the same key exactly, or at the same speed?!
Avatar 2:13pm
Will in Norman:

↳ Webhamster Henry @2:12
there were test tone records during those days, not very easy to find though
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm

If you have a good tuner (or tuning app) and you know the song is in "G" or whatever, and your turntable has a sped adjustment, you can check it that way.

that is true . The trick is to make sure his voice isn't pitched too high or low, so for that, you'd need to analyze a corpus of his singing to see where his vowel formants are, then compensate those where his voice is not pitched correctly.

Will, I've definitely heard that. Mac, who used to air the Antique Phonograph Record Program used to try out the discs to see what the optimal speed should be. In more modern times, I heard some discs were mastered at lower levels so the grooves weren't as wide to increase the playing time.
