The suffered a lot, also, from being released in the middle of a storm of political contemporary music that was vital, original and energetic. Within a few years of 1979, I was immersed (for the first time) in the Velvet Underground, 13th Floor Elevators, Big Star, tons of current indie bands, obscure garage punk 45s, UK psych and on and on...

Yeah, me too. I was talking to an old friend last night about when we used to go see the Smithereens in their early days at the Court Tavern in New Brunswick

Used to get bands up from SF and LA and down from Vancouver. Not to mention local crazies.

We were lucky in that we're pretty much right in the middle between NYC and Philly so we got tons of touring band on off nights here at the shore, at City Gardens in Trenton or in New Brunwsick

Underestimate him at your peril! He was constantly breaking new ground with world music, and had some heavy people in his bands. This album has Sonny Sharrock, Roy Ayers and Miroslav Vitous.
