MarkTime (vintage radio airchecks), and Krys O (aka Sister Krys - WFMU alumna 1985-1991, longtime Church of the Subgenius monk. Playing cinematic ephemera, schizoid weirdos, all styles served here). Plus: surprise guests galore. (illustration courtesy of https://www.jimflora.com/)

Favoriting November 5, 2024: The Wiggle Room w/ Lost Media Archive: Unknown cassette found in a burned down country home in Puli, Taiwan circa late 1996.
An unknown cassette found in amongst ashes and rubble of a burnt down country home next to a rice field, while wandering in the mountain town of Puli,Taiwan circa 1996. I seem to remember that it was next to an old shoe and broken glass.

What an excellent find. It sounds like it is regional music from Taiwan. Very cool.

The best thing I found on the street was a burned Phillip Glass CD. I think I cleaned it up, and the first couple tracks played... then it just skipped.

The skipping part was interesting...

The only reason I stepped into the burnt house is that I made out this cassette o the floor, looking through a dirty window. I don't know how you can hope for better content on a cassette like this.

Skips can add an added dimension for sure

Austin Rich:

True story: I was at a friends house, and we were listening to a Nine Inch Nails remix CD, and it was skipping, and many of us didn't realize it for a VERY long time. We thought it was a particularly strange re-mix.

(This story took place around 1994? 1995? Somewhere around there.)

Late 1996 I believe.

Not that you need a reason, but why were you in Taiwan? I would visit if I could.
Avatar 👻 8:30pm
BC Sterrett:

I was a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Taiwan for 2 years. Still an active member of the faith. I think I was in Puli for about 6 months. This was found on our day off once a week to do laundry and write letters home etc.

Sort of like the Peace Corps, but with a Latter-day Saints angle. How very cool.

Also there is virtually no knowing how this cassette fit into the life of whomever lived there. Someone could have gifted it and the recipient had no interest or it could have been in daily use as they did their daily Tai Chi or whatever.
