America is only 275 years old -- a mere historical blip. Whatever happens next, 4 years from now, this country will be a very different place. We had a wee teeny blip of progrssiveness from the 1960's onward, and the Yalliban in this country is hellbent on taking back every scrap of social progress ever made.

I fucking hate NYT also; may drop my sub and just keep my sub to the Food section/NYT Cooking. Instead of watching the Orange Anus like a hawk, instead of reporting on EVERY forced birth by a minor or rape victim, instead of naming EVERY woman denied care in forced birth states, they fed the culture wars instead. Quislings like Ross Doubthat and David Brooks were given fucking megaphones for culture war issues, and they ran a different "crap my trans kid endurs in school in shitty State X" and "yet another transwoman in sports" story. I have ZERO issues with trans rights but FFS we didn't need it every fucking week when there are much bigger fish to fry. Ditto for failing to call out college campuses on BLATANT pro-Hamas violent anti-Semitism being allowed to run rampant. Also, they kept forgetting that huge swaths of the population mainline Faux News, and have ZERO fucking idea how complex economic systems work. Or medicine. A few nights ago a guy on a barstool next to me insisted that "women start to show pregnancies at 5 weeks" and "NVIDIA is huge because they're making a ton of money making smartphones that are being distributed for free to illegals." REALLY. He really believed it.

One more thing: GenX is ironically the only generation born into a USA with some semblance of improvement of minority and women's rights from the 1960's, while also being the LAST generation in the US who even had a shot at wealth accumulation. We were the last to have any shot at a pension anywhere. We may or may not get Social Security or Medicaid. A ban on insurers discriminating against pre-existing conditions was only passed in the freaking 90's IIRC. All it takes is ONE generation to turn any country into a shithole, and we're well on our way. I'm glad I never had kids. Anyone under 40 is pretty much fucked these days.

okay yes, it's *possible*... and i don't know that much about all those situations; but the berlin wall came down in economic desperation on one side and a majority of progressively-minded people outweighing the forever lingering nazis. we don't have a progressively-minded population. at all.
the "liberals" are right-wing hypocrites and the others are blatantly racist, selfish puppets.
america is essentially an infant. there has been a very successful campaign to dummy-down americans, and infantalize them so they feel helpless and dependent on those in power.

Well, I'm not sure how useful it is, sure. The hard right and soft right in this country differ only in how quickly they want wealth extracted and accumulated in the capitalist class -- and how brutalist things are going to be along the way. I think it's probably more fruitful to focus on how to reclaim the *people* from the nonsensical shadow of ideology. I mean, if you ask most Trump voters or others that you disagree with if they're in favor of quickened wealth extraction for a very few at the cost of the health and lives of the many, they'd say no -- but those aren't the terms in which our politics is contested. The hard right now offers an id fantasy where the very forces that the core of the party represents and benefits from are hidden, sublimated into appeals to vanquish an outside enemy and restore a mythical vanished purity. Until there's a workable strategy for fighting that fantasy with actual solidarity among ALL of us, the oppressed, then we are going to continue to be offered the ogre's choice, die fast or die slow, with no actual opportunities to have a meaningful politics of survival, let alone flourishing.

Sorry to bang on.

And, honestly, I think that strategy starts with antiracism. The capitalist system is fundamentally a strategy of racial division of the workers so that all can stay oppressed. Race as a concept was created by capital, and racism is capitalism's strategy. Break down the racism, unite the workers: that's the only way forward.
