He was already the section head on a crash crew in the air force. he also ran the base dental lab. If he had been drafted, he would for sure have died a foot soldier in the mud. It initially had great ratings and was the toast of the critics (despite being after all only a sitcom about a working class gal dating a medical doctor) but then ratings fell apart and they retooled the show (always a sign of desperation), and when that failed to reverse the show’s trajectory, it was quickly canceled.
