The very best thing about this series is it forces me out of my musical boxes. A lot of it is personal faves, but everything is run through the filter of what would THIS dj, in THIS town, in 1995, actually be playing? Believe it or not, I'd never heard this song before! I found it while I had my "Music Director" hat on. love it.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 7:28pm

Oh, right! Damn. I need to watch again. It was so good. I remember it often being as funny as it was thoughtful.

My grandfather didn't seem to like much music, but if you could find a funny or dirty country song, then he would usually say, "I like this song!" He was pretty crass and goofy, most of the time. He was a real outdoor type. Built the cabin he raised his family in, hunted and fished to eat until he couldn't anymore. He was one of those tough old outdoor types, but he loved to read and was a substitute English Teacher in his later years. He pretended to be dimmer than he was, because he liked his humble roots.

I bet mine had some albums like that. He and my Grandma led a very different life from ours. I love to look at old pictures of them laughing and drinking with friends.

That happens, sometimes. I feel like a lot of kids try to consciously go in the opposite direction of their parents. I'm not sure if it always works; I find more things in common with my parents, now, than ever. But I think a lot of people feel compelled to do something different than their parents.

My grandparents were born in the 19th century and never came to America. I did know that my mom's dad played the violin and even performed on the radio. I'm guessing my dad's father was also musically inclined since my father played harmonica, zither and spoons. Music was how they entertained themselves on the farm.

I love that! There's something about people playing simple music on a farm that sound great to me.

and my OTHER grandpa's DAD played country music records on his local station. He and his sons had a show called Pa Nelson and His Hillbilly Boys. Or something like that. I've searched high and low for any reference to that show but of course its impossibly lost to time. fun story though.

I don't know enough about music to be able to explain why I didn't like this one at first. But the more I listen to it, and feel it, the more it clicks like crazy. Wanted to like it, for the lyrics. Came to love it, for the weird rhythms or whatever it is I'm picking up on...
