With billows and blasts from choirs and orchesters
Buskers and talkers
Big bands and squawkers,
the Stork Club has retained its qualities of decaying elegance and dwindling significance since the late 1950s.

December 8, 2024: A Birthday Karambolage
It's a four-birthday pileup today - necessitated by last week's late cancellation. Jersey-City-born alto-sax standout Jimmy Lyons, and Chi-Town crooner Lou Rawls shouldn't have to suffer for me having a life, so we will honor 'em both, while also leaving room in this long, overtime show for this week's cake-recipients Gregg Allman from Memphis, and NYC's own Sammy Davis Jr., who turns 99 today.
Listen to this show:

‘ Jimmy Lyons (December 1, 1931 – May 19, 1986) was an American alto saxophone player. He is best known for his long tenure in the Cecil Taylor Unit. Lyons was the only constant member of the band from the mid-1960s until his death. Taylor never worked with another musician as frequently as he did with Lyons. Lyons' playing, influenced by Charlie Parker, kept Taylor's avant-garde music tethered to the jazz tradition ‘…

‘ Louis Allen Rawls (December 1, 1933 – January 6, 2006) was an American baritone singer. He released 61 albums, sold more than 40 million records, and had numerous charting singles, most notably the song "You'll Never Find Another Love like Mine". He also worked as a film, television, and voice actor. He was a three-time winner of the Best Male R&B Vocal Performance Grammy Award ‘…

‘ Gregory LeNoir Allman (December 8, 1947 – May 27, 2017) was an American musician, singer and songwriter. He was known for performing in the Allman Brothers Band. Allman grew up with an interest in rhythm and blues music, and the Allman Brothers Band fused it with rock music, jazz, and country. He wrote several of the band's most popular songs, including "Whipping Post", "Melissa", and "Midnight Rider". Allman also had a successful solo career, releasing seven studio albums. He was born and spent much of his childhood in Nashville, Tennessee, before relocating to Daytona Beach, Florida and then Macon, Georgia ‘…

’ Samuel George Davis Jr. (December 8, 1925 – May 16, 1990) was an American singer, actor, comedian and dancer.
At age two, Davis began his career in Vaudeville with his father Sammy Davis Sr. and the Will Mastin Trio, which toured nationally, and his film career began in 1933. After military service, Davis returned to the trio and became a sensation following key nightclub performances at Ciro's (in West Hollywood) in 1951, including one after the Academy Awards ceremony. With the trio, he became a recording artist. In 1954, at the age of 29, he lost his left eye in a car accident. Several years later, he converted to Judaism, finding commonalities between the oppression experienced both by black Americans and Jewish communities. In 1958, he faced a backlash for his involvement with a white woman at a time when interracial relationships were taboo in the U.S. and when interracial marriage was not legalized nationwide until 1967 ‘…

Malcontent:
Saw him with Cecil only once, in the mid-1980s at Artpark near Niagara Falls (back when they programmed the most interesting music). Gregg Bendian's percussion whirlwind was a contrast to Lyons' stately presence on stage center.
Took my younger brother, who needed to be exposed to some proper culture. A half hour into the set, he leaned over and whispered "Are they still warming up?"

Cecil Taylor and his quartet were playing in a now defunkt club in Greenwich Village, NYC. The New York Times used to select an upcoming weekend show in the Friday arts section, and recommended the Taylor show, saying he used to be all bombast, but now he's varying the intensity, dynamic shifts, soft and loud. People took this a certain way, and there was a line to get in down the block (I didn't have an advance ticket). I got on line, but the line moved up-people were going in, sitting for a few minutes, then leaving. While the NY Times reviewed was correct on the dynamic shifts, he didn't make clear that the quiet sections could be as "out" or dissonant as the loud sections. I got in, sat in the back, but eventually got a front seat, stayed for 2 sets.
