As to what classical music is, Leonard Bernstein took a fairly good shot at defining it as "exact music", by which he really meant "composer-specified music". That is, the music as laid out by the composer is much closer to the final product you hear than with other genres of music, wherein the instrumentation, performance, and other details can change it relatively enormously.

That is, you can have the same named piece done by a jug band, an orchestra, or a piano soloist -- while if you do that with a classical music piece people will understand most of the renditions as a goof. a student effort, or a temporary expedient rather than as a cover in the usual sense.

Bernstein's explanation was on a recorded series. I'm the one who supplied the wording "composer-specified" because his word "exact" didn't say according to whom. He went into how in movies the "auteur" is the director, but the conductor of an orchestra was not in as influential role.

an interesting theory about baroque architecture...bernini reigned supreme in rome and his architecture projects outward just like music and painting... its been theorized that borromini took the spaces left in the wake of bernini's vectorization and as a result his architecture is inverted in terms of how it projects....so there's a convex/ concave relationship between bernini and borromini

good evening, Carol! Cullan! Everyone!

Cullan, so glad to hear you back on the air :)

been lurking, loving the show -- especially those Medieval selections!

when i worked at the Tower Records Outlet in the 1990s, we had a ton of classical records, CDs, cassettes -- one of my co-workers gave me a crash course in Baroque music -- which i have since forgotten! but he was so helpful and knowledgable in all things Classical (which was weird; my Mom was what you might describe as a "Classical music snob," but she could never really explain Classical music to me!)

iirc, we had to play Classical music in the morning; after 12noon, we would alternate Classical CDs with other stuff -- jazz, rap, rock, etc. -- and during the holiday season, we had to play "holiday music" -- one of the CDs that i fell in love with (and never got sick of, no matter how often it was played!) was "On the Way to Bethlehem: Music of the Medieval Pilgrim" -- i still have this CD, and always play it around this time of year :)

it finally aired, and for MONTHS i could not look out the windows or at mirrors once it was dark outside (where i grew up, there was nothing but farmland behind the house i grew up in, and no street lights or anything facing the road!)

but the PIG president of the school wanted more aid, so wanted "university status" so started reducing arts programs and increasing "business" classes - to attract more people...which of course worked, because most americans are also PIGS.
