A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

I still need to look into Sonic Youth's more experimental side. I was listening to Body/Head recently, which is a project by Kim Gordon and Bill Nace. Nice guitar noise with Jandek vibes at times, and the occasional harmonica...

That's pretty cool. I said it the other day, but if I had a choice, I'd be born around 1945, 1955 max, even if I were a marginalized sort. I'd gladly dodge drafts and everything else just to see acts like The Shangri-Las live in their prime, and in the prime of what we now call "pop music". I listen to all kinds of music, of course, but after 1970, there is a lot more that I need to side-step in order to find the goods. And also, people were able to just drift from job to job and travel the world, or they could own a house and car, support a family, with a janitor job. It seems pretty ideal also to be retirement age at this time, to say the least.

↳ Song: "I'm Off To Cape Kennedy / A Tune About The Moon" ...
Of course, this song came to mind after the song about Jupiter. This is from a kids record in my collection, that I really love! It's about an elephant that is sad that he can't be in love with an ant, so he wants to go to the moon.

There's a Christmas connection to this Clyde & Phyllis song! I guess it makes it appropriate?

An elephant with psychedelic bell-bottoms, no less.

This whole record is as weird as you think it is. I'm not sure it's actually "for" kids.

↳ Song: "Moontown - Walking On The Moon" by "Lucia Pamela"
And, songs about the moon remind me of this song by the legend, Lucia Pamela!

Must be a statement about marriage equality for ants and elephants!

I think you're supposed to listen to the elephant "get very high" going to the moon, and take note of his "advice."

My old roommate gifted this to me in the year 2000, because of her song about the year 2000. I've loved it ever since.

↳ Song: "Hierarchy of Bodies" by "EMS"
EMS is known by many names, but I saw them perform under the name "Trigger Object" over the summer at one of the few shows that I attended, in person. They are fantastic live, and I would love to see them do an EMS set live. I bought this record from them when I saw them.

↳ Song: "Thought Bubbles" by "Sonic Youth"
I never heard of that 1987 film “Made in U.S.A.”
The Sonic Youth movie scene that impresses me most was Elina Löwensohn’s “Kool Thing” dance in Hal Hartley’s “Simple Men” (1992).

I love that scene. I should rewatch his movies again. I remember liking them quite a bit... 25 + years ago...

The song about the elephant and the ant made me cry a bit! I, too, would go to the moon for the ant I love.

↳ Song: "Elderly Woman on Black [Excerpt]" by "Pas Musique"
This band sent me a nice package of LPs and CDs of their music, out of the blue, without any warning. And it's pretty good! So it made it on the show.

Not to drop hints in the Digital Salon, but... yeah, that's how it works. If your record is good, and you send it to me, I'll play it. I'm that easy.

I have a few Synergy records now, and I really like their style. Seems like they're sort of on a Vangelis vibe, but go their own way...

Also: it seems as if Passport Records usually put out really good records. I have a few things on this label now, and they're all great. So that's my tip of the week!

↳ Song: "Half-Earth" by "Sagan"
This band, and their albums, are in tribute to Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" TV series, and is a really excellent record.
