Handy, can you recommend me a couple poetry collections? I've decided in 2025 i'm finally gonna read some poetry. I ordered Keats complete works and i have the complete Emily Dickinson already but i'd love to know what you like.

Those are good things to have!

Let's see ...

One of my favorites -- and my mentor and semi-adopted father figure -- Thomas Lux:

www.poetryfoundation.org...

bookshop.org...

Larry Levis was someone I found through Tom:

bookshop.org...

bookshop.org...

Anne Sexton is visceral and amazing:

bookshop.org...

Plath is absolutely essential, of course:

bookshop.org...

And James Wright's complete poems are so worthwhile:

Also: John Dunne is awesome and sexy and then gets weird and religious, sometimes all in the same poem.

Dean:

You didn't ask me, but I am an avid poetry reader. Keats and Dickinson are a super strong foundation. I can't not mention John Ashbery, but also Joe Brainard, whose I Remember isn't exactly poetry. Among the living I read Frederick Seidel. Wallace Stevens, Elizabeth Bishop, Ezra Pound, and gosh, yes, Philip Larkin.

Donne can be bliss.

Lyn Hejinian, RIP.

In '69 or thereabouts, when I was in fourth grade, I wanted to be Billy in Easy Rider, so for half a year or so I wore a leather jacket with fringes. We sold baggies of oregano to our classmates. That's the last I recall of ever caring about "dressing like" or, for that matter, so-called drugs.

Charlie Brown is the April-est. I had Peanuts sheets as a kid, and the thing CB got to say on them was "I feel the need to have the feeling that it's good to be alive."
