I didn’t have health insurance in my 20s and couldn’t afford to get a mole looked at. Turns out it was melanoma, and I let that shit grow. insurance companies are owned by "pharmacy benefit managers" - parasites that also own pharmacies and one, optum, has bullied over 10% of americas doctors to become their employees.
the 3 parasites, optum, cvs and cigna/express scripts are solely responsible for runaway prescription and healthcare pricing. they are flat-out deflecting the money to themselves.

Back in 2014, in early Obamacare, I was unemployed and tried to get insurance for myself. At that time, after filling out a questionnaire honestly, I was denied the ability to purchase an individual plan due to a history of alcoholism. Have been sober 6 years at that time, and went through a rehab and in great health.

i gave up on doctors, except in crisis situations, when i was about 17. i was plagued with bronchial problems since i was ~7. in my early 20s i bought life insurance, so my mother would have the disposal costs covered.
when i was ~24 i started a serious education in health and healing, and my health gradually improved until by the time i was ~35 my health and strength were considerably better than most people younger than myself.

... and since O. asked about the cost, before Medicare (171.45 a month; now 185.00) I was paying $69 a month for a pre-medicare retiree plan. (a credit from unused sick time locked in a lower premium when I retired in 2020. Now, that's become a backup plan (the 80/20) for another $23. So $208 a mo. w/ higher deductibles & out-of-pocket & some services not covered.

My friend has recently been getting insurance through Medicaid. He used to have insurance through the company he worked for but he switched careers recently. He says the doctors he has been seeing are knoweldgeable and friendly, the facilities are modern and clean, waiting times are short, and everything is covered. Much better than his old fancy company insurance.

i used to like the doctor i found when i moved to this area. the first time in my life i could say that. mainly because he's not an arrogant dick.
then he sold out to that scum, optum, and he now sucks. i don't consider him a doctor anymore; just a technician. he probably only actually *touches* 1-2 people out of every 40-50 patients. the corporation protocol is the ask a few questions, feed it into a computer and get the diagnosis.
so, whether it's medicaid of not he went from decent to shit.he's still friendly, but now with a guard up, because he's probably being monitored.

Medicare is great!

but the medicaid "Total Care SNP" through Horizon? not so much . . . and trying to change it has been a horribly time consuming nightmare too -- i guess the assumption is that bc you are "older" and unemployed, you are "retired" and have nothing better to do than to be on the phone and on "hold" for hours?

Doctors can assist a patient with losing a large portion of his life (23years) by prescribing opiates and benzodiazepines without explanation of the consequences. You can lose jobs, real estate, family relationships and normal everyday living. I am now on a taper program and trying to heal. It takes much time to get well from benzodiazepines (and antidepressants) Insurance "helped" me a lot.

I'm an artist and never had employment that offered health insurance and therefore have been uninsured for a decade apart from brief stints of medicaid if it was a low income year. of course I'm terrified of the unexpected emergency but in general, I am healthy and day to day do not feel like I'm missing out on what seems to be a complicated, expensive!!!, and manipulative maze engineered purely for profit.

Are there health insurance advisors that one could hire ( like an accountant for taxes)?
  11:25pm
carlos danger:

Basic terms:
Premium - How much you pay for insurance
Deductible - How much you pay out of pocket
Coinsurance - How much you pay after you hit your deductible. Usually expressed as a percentage, e.g., insurance pays 80%, you pay 20%
Out-of-pocket maximum - Once you're in copay territory there is usually a maximum amount you are on the hook to pay, after which insurance pays 100% of the cost
Copay - One-time fee for routine services (dental checkup, vision test, etc.)
