One is much more hopeful ... or maybe just set at a more post-revolutionary inflection point, where mutual aid is the law of the land and the last strongholds of reaction have been broken, a retrospective look back at the revolution from the perspective of twenty years on. Framed as an oral history. The other is set in a much more broken place, with the U.S. gone and the landmass divided into rump capitalist states (the Northeast and central Midwest), the United Christian States (the South, broadly), the Republics of Texas and California (soft socialism, it seems like), Cascadia (same), several resurgent Indigenous nations, the Kingdom of Albuquerque, and the Heavenly Kingdom, an EVEN MORE reactionary theocratic state that carves out territory from the UCS and Republic of Texas. Most of the book is about a war between HK and Texas. And about trauma. So, two looks at two post-revolutionary points. Been on my brain lately. Just hoping the revolution comes before I'm too old to help out.

I mean, all art is made under capitalism and nothing is clean and we all do what we can. But I worry that asking about what it's value is is speaking in their language instead of sticking with art for what it is: a thing that isn't trying to sell you something, the opposite of a commercial. Yes, artists gotta eat, and you have to sell your art, but the creation, the Ding an sich, is in some ways a rejection of conversations about value. Or could be?

	9:49am Charles in Chicago: On the "value of art" topic.... I've created a lot of music and computer-based art over the decades... most of it has never been seen or heard except for by friends. I've never tried to sell anything because I've always had a day job. The most valuable thing, to me, was the music that was made with other people, not just me sitting in a room by myself. Improvising with other people, creating together in real-time, is a pretty intense way of coming together that is intrinsically valuable. As Fredericks said, Jazz requires listening to others. For me, the value of art is the interpersonal connection it can foster.

The other is set in a much more broken place, with the U.S. gone and the landmass divided into rump capitalist states (the Northeast and central Midwest), the United Christian States (the South, broadly), the Republics of Texas and California (soft socialism, it seems like), Cascadia (same), several resurgent Indigenous nations, the Kingdom of Albuquerque, and the Heavenly Kingdom, an EVEN MORE reactionary theocratic state that carves out territory from the UCS and Republic of Texas. Most of the book is about a war between HK and Texas. And about trauma. So, two looks at two post-revolutionary points. Been on my brain lately. Just hoping the revolution comes before I'm too old to help out.

I've never tried to sell anything because I've always had a day job. The most valuable thing, to me, was the music that was made with other people, not just me sitting in a room by myself. Improvising with other people, creating together in real-time, is a pretty intense way of coming together that is intrinsically valuable. As Fredericks said, Jazz requires listening to others. For me, the value of art is the interpersonal connection it can foster.

I’m not a gigantic fan of what I feel is a bit an over-emphasis emphasis on Christian reggae, and DJ Sarge does air some kind of sappy schmaltzy stuff too, as you mention. I find it a bit tough as well. I do like it though when true roots-reggae is played, which happens frequently. The goal, though, was to fill the playlist void so I’m very happy to do that.
