i have 4-5 of those.
but had maybe 30 of my father's albums pulled aside (~ 10-12 on command) after he shuffled off this mortal coil. my older sister squatted in the house, waiting for the bank to repossess it, and never told me when she got notice; so they probably got thrown into a dumpster.

↳ Song: "John, I'm Only Dancing" by "Mike Garson"
i completely wrote off Bowie with the "thin white duke" thing! i'd been losing interest gradually, but...

then sometime in the 90s i was in a waiting room, reading an interview with David Bowie in people magazine(!) - he was asked about politics and lyrical significance. . . implication being that Bowie doesn't come off as giving a crap about the shitty state of the world.
he specifically pointed out certain issues that especially weighed on him, and copped a general gloominess, and said "if you don't laugh you'll fucking cry, right?"

meant a lot to me, and gave me a new respect for the man.

this particular use of the cuica is making me smile! sounds like a mourning dove!

I like Bowie, but I never could take him seriously. In the 70s I understand he expressed some sympathy for fascism. But maybe that was the effects of the Cocaine, cause it sure wasn’t love.

This record is a compilation of Brazilian Carnaval songs on the Odeon label.

My dad was mega into Bowie. Hs music was always so present, when I was little I thought of him as a far away uncle or something like that.

a lot of dumbassery came with the "punk"/new wave scene.
i'll never respect siouxsie sioux, Lemmy, sid vicious, etc (joy division?) for their swastikas and shit, even if it was mainly borne out of raging stupidity! and the whole dressing like corporate zombies schtick repulsed me from the start!
...but i do think coke had a lot to do with it, at least in Bowie's case.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm
coelacanth∅:

...and Eno and Fripp calling that song "swastika girls". they say a joke and a reference to a magazine laying around the studio; but weren't they intelligent enough to know not to use those references flippantly? (especially Eno, who i Love and exalt! -c'mon!)

That, and second generation trauma I guess.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:36pm
coelacanth∅:

↳ Roy_Santiago @4:28
i guess... i read years ago that sid vicious claimed it was only meant as a fuck you to his parents' generation.
...but ya know, i felt the same way about my parents' generation (although i respect them more than my own, now!) -and i still knew better than to use a swastika as a rebellion! (granted, sid vicious was a complete imbecile)
Avatar 4:46pm
Roy_Santiago:

Yeah Sid's life was pretty tragic.

I agree. I think my favorite fashionable statement was how certain punks wearing swastikas were being “ ironic”. How many brain cellls did Sid Vicious own to even understand what irony meant? I also dry heaved with their fashionable hammer and cycle. Milk fed baby Punks in the West hadn’t a clue about what happening with dissidents in Russia and their puppets. I agree with the late great Hasil Adkins talking about Punk fashion sense “ bunch a Halloween witches”

Aww, Roy, another great show. Everyone be safe and cozy. Feeling very sad and also anxious in the wake of the misery and pain besetting southern Ca / LA., the poorer people who don’t have the resources to start all over again.
