A friend noted that 'I'm Not There' may be the kind of film Dylan himself would make; and at that point maybe the only way to TELL his story. But I loved the new one as a film; it got a lot of things so right, the actual facts not being one of them but who cares? It's a great story, with excellent performances, and thoroughly entertaining and satisfying. This from me, a Dylanophile.

Best fuzz tone ever recorded, IMO, Incense And Peppermints, Ed King playing a Tele through what was either a Maestro FZ-1 or FZ-1A fuzz pedal. The tone literally sizzles if you listen close for it, and that's what the simulators don't match. 2nd best...Spirit In The Sky, which was Norman playing through a custom built, one-off fuzz pedal that can't be replicated.

Bronze is up in the air, but today I'm giving it to Carole Kaye playing through a Maestro Fuzztone, probably the FZ-1A, on Brian Wilson's "Fire" track from Smile, Fall '66. The fuzz tone was supposed to represent the fire sonically, and at the end of the track Brian instructs the other instruments (including Jim Gordon on drums) that they are supposed to be putting the fire out as the track dies down. I'll also give "Think For Yourself" a bronze mention here too.

Awesome insights. Yes, I was always fascinated with the "fuzz bass" credit on "Think For Yourself." I once did a deep dive into fuzzness and found that one of the very earliest true instances of fuzz was the Ventures' "2000 Pound Bee" from 1965. Do you know of an earlier instance?

A real teaser of what could have been is that The Beatles had an early, if not a prototype, Gibson Maestro FZ-1 fuzz pedal while they were recording She Loves You, and they apparently tried it on a few takes but didn't end up using it...and sadly those early takes with the fuzz are lost and probably will never be heard. So that would have been 1963, in the UK no less, and it's a wild what if scenario.

YES! I am right with you on that one. Amazing performance and solo...one of the best of the 60's and beyond, Fogerty and his Ricky 325 with that Bigsby. I recommend that video clip to a lot of guitarists, and they're all in a "whoa!" moment after seeing it. Why Fogerty kept it off Woodstock's film/album releases at the time is baffling. Their entire set was incredible.

Amazing -- it would have been just one more of their iconic contributions. It's always hard to pin down the real first of anything, but it's true that most of us first heard fuzz on "Satisfaction."

And then there's Rocket 88, Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats, back in '51 where the amp fell off the roof of a car on the way to the studio, a few tubes cracked, and they decided to record with it anyway...and it was all fuzzy and distorted. Not quite an external fuzz device like a pedal or a studio preamp overloading, but it's pretty fuzzy

I can't imagine hearing a fuzz guitar on She Loves You! That's why the fact they did try it and the tapes are probably lost forever is so sad. "Satisfaction" does get the recognition as the first major record to feature fuzz because it was and is such a massive hit. Funny thing is Keith pictured it as an Otis Redding tune, and heard a growling sax on it, and that fuzz guitar was his way of having it sound like a sax line.
