Skunks will hiss like cats. I encountered one many years ago near my parents' house. I quickly crossed the street after the skunk hissed at me.

A couple of years ago, I literally bumped into a skunk on my walk to the bus stop. It was in total darkness before the sun came up. We startled each other, but no spraying. I ran across the street, and started laughing out of relief.

When I lived in Pasadena they were a real plague. I came home from work late one night and I was so tired I imagined little dog was walking on it's hind legs across my front lawn. "Wow, look at that!" I thought. Then I realized it was a skunk with it's tail up ready to giving me a hosing.

I snapped to attention fast, and barely got inside before it went off.
