Tue. Jan 21st, Noon - 3pm: A Tribute to Mick Hobbs (More info...)

Favoriting January 21, 2025: R.I.P., MICK HOBBS: A Three-Hour Tribute
Today's show is a celebration of the music of British multi-instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter Mick Hobbs, who died earlier this month. Hobbs's recordings range from skronky avant post-punk (R.I.O. division) to gentle, medieval music–flavored folk. Officer! was the main outlet for his songwriting, but Hobbs was also part of many other great bands, such as The Work, The Momes, The Lo Yo Yo, Family Fodder, The Lowest Note, Strobe Talbot, and Half Japanese.

mick's an underrated guitarist. while the bass was his "home" instrument, his guitar playing was top-notch. I read a book on the Woodstock, NY music scene. Singer Maria Muldaur mentioned living near Garth Hudson. In the mornings they'd hear his organ practice sounds wafting over to their yard. Bach!

yes!

first, i would check out strobe talbot's "let's born to rock!" it's simply immediate and irrepressible.

i would look also at "never mind the bucket" by officer! it's a live recording from 2015 that exudes warmth and humo[u]r. the material is drawn from a wide historical range it also illustrates his talent with people.

on "sunday girl" by family fodder, his bass playing is hilarious and says a lot about how, while authoritatively present to the music, he could be quite cheeky.

i take some time to think of more.

also, mick and i recorded an album titled "bite my knee" in 2002. it's my writing along with accompaniments that we both composed. it's a special record that just a month ago he told me is "a work of art."

there's more, but i am in an unheated room, so I'll warm my fingers before going on.

ahh! silverfox! I thought I'd never hear this song played anywhere.

An unheated room on a day like this? You must be trying to recapture the creative energy of squat living!

Michael Evans is also sorely missed, a truly inspired drummer and a staple of the NYC experimental scene.

mick also had a program[me] on resonance radio (resonancefm.com) called "life and living" for a few years. he produced some "dogcasts" as well.

Oh, just noticed via Discogs:
at bottom of “officer” entry, both the initial cassettes 1983 & 1985 have been rereleased on a single Austrian label CD titled “earlier music” (2018).
Same label reissued a CD of “some songs” & “bandagen” (2023) = yeah!

it's a devastating loss. while his health certainly was declining, the heart attack (at 69!) was a surprise.

Thanks for the Mick Hobbs tribute, Tony. Like most of the artists you play, he was completely unfamiliar to me before hearing him here. Great selections!

Thanks Tony for this more than deserved tribute show. And thanks to Benb for providing first hand informations about this great and prolific artist.
