Douglas R:

When my wife and I were first dating, we went to see “Wild at Heart” either at The Charles in Baltimore or The Bexley in Columbus.

I had been following Lynch since I first saw one of his single panel cartoons—Angry Dog perhaps?—probably in the Village Voice in the 80’s. As I was watching this latest incarnation of his art of moviemaking, I’m thinking “Wow”, but also thinking, “Is she liking this, or enjoying this, or whatever this, because, you know, David Lynch?” A few years later, we did not know if our child was going to be a boy or a girl, but we seriously considered naming the child Pace, as Lula and Sailor did.

A great loss in the world of film, music, and art.

A great loss.

I was too young to watch Twin Peaks when it first aired, but I was a teen when it reran on Bravo in the late '90s and I taped every episode. Throughout high school and college, one of my main functions in life was dragging those tapes to various friends' houses and walking them through the series. I was basically a missionary.

The real hero of today, of course, is the Rev. Dr. King.

He took up the fight for justice. It wasn't easy, and he faced massive opposition, but he led us to a better world. And, paid the price for it with his life. Let us honor him, and all who fight for justice. Remember the Dream, and carry the fight forward, for justice is never an easy fight.

Jeff Moore:

"My mind went quickly to Mary Reber. Reber lives on a quiet street in Everett, Washington, in a beautiful home that also happens to be one of the most significant settings and symbols in the larger Lynch universe: Laura Palmer’s house. In 2014, while Lynch was filming Twin Peaks: The Return for several weeks at Reber’s house, he spontaneously asked her to appear in the show’s final scene as the home’s alt-universe owner, Alice Tremond, forever entrenching her into the elaborate and beloved Twin Peaks mythology.

In the years since The Return’s conclusion, reality and the dream world have continued to blur in that deliciously Lynchian way. Reber, now a true Twin Peaks obsessive herself, generously allows vetted fans to tour her/Laura/Alice’s house, functioning as a sort of shepherd for what has become a cherished pilgrimage site for those who see themselves in the tormented Laura. Warm and empathic, Reber often ends up listening to her visitors’ stories of trauma and heartache and comforting them with a combination of wisdom from her own life and thoughtful analyses of Lynch’s work. In many ways, Reber has become inextricable from Lynch’s fandom; her home is an emotional nexus and unofficial museum, teeming with talismans and pieces of art that patrons have left for Laura and Reber over the years."

I took a film course in college on David Lynch. It was around the time Inland Empire came out, so we had to screen the film as part of the curriculum. I love most of his work, but found Inland Empire to be the most difficult film I've ever sat through in a theater. By the end I felt physically ill, and would have left the screening early if it hadn't been for class.

Sadly, privilege helps escape formal, legal justice (quite often), and because not everyone is uniformly committed to bringing justice. But if each of us stays ethical, stays true to ourselves and in our interactions with others, we might encourage everyone to take a turn for the better, cosmic justice eventually reflected back...

Though for me, I actually learned about this song and Nina in general through the '90s remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. I had to look this up online from the lyrics, it was SOMETHING ELSE! Who is this? What country are they from? Where is this song from? Is it gospel? Jazz? Soul? A real mind-opening moment when I first entered the world of Nina Simone.

Similarly in The Last Waltz, the real revelation for me was learning about Joni Mitchell. Though "Coyote" isn't typical of her earlier stuff, it was a breathtakingly original song, so open and free, unlike any other rock or jazz I heard to that point. Though I might prefer her folk material or early '70s albums better now, I treasure "Coyote" and Hejira the most as my intro to her genius.

Pro-tip for those doing the Twin Peaks rewatch: by happenstance I watched the deleted scenes from FWWM just before the last two episodes of Season 3 the last time around, and they slotted in perfectly. There's a lot more of Laura's run through the woods (which of course comes up again in the finale), and the way it's paced it even feels like an episode of the Return!

We put on FMU with a friend recently, and they said, "Oh, I didn't think they played THIS kind of music!" and about 47,000 things to say all tried to run out of the same narrow doorway in my brain at the same time, and they all got stuck. But come on!
