Let me prime the pump: KFLM is both a high school radio station, AND a pirate station, so there are two NEW horizons, this week. It’s also the first time I’ve taken such a SMALL amount of source material, to spin out into a full program. This hour of 90’s radio is based around a single, 21-minute episode of TV…

I wasn't that into them, when they were new. But lately I've found a few things I dug.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:11pm
Austin Rich:

I was very into the radio in High School, and between 1989 and 1993 - my High School Years - the "Alternative / Grunge" movement sort of swept over the radio pretty hard. I was a sucker for anything different and weird, but I remember that those years were full of a lot of old music tempered with some new music. I think I had as many classic rock albums as I did Nirvana and Guns and Roses. It was a reflection of what I heard on different radio stations, mostly.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:13pm
Austin Rich:

↳ Song: "I’m on Fire" by "Bruce Springsteen"
I used to be obsessed with this song when I was a kid. My parents were really into Springsteen, and I heard a lot of it growing up. But this one really struck me, for some reason. I've been thinking about doing a cover, but mangling it in my own way...

↳ Austin Rich @8:13
i love this song. terms of endearment have evolved since it was written. But it's not about a girl. It's about a married woman, and Bruce is fighting the urge to steal her from her partner. It's a beautiful song about LUST. period.

Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:18pm

The Don Henley was EVERYWHERE back then, for sure. But I never bonded with his stuff. I was certainly more of the Mojo Nixon camp when it came to Henley's music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm

↳ Austin Rich @8:18
Those three songs are literally name checked, so I had to play them, but like I said, I loved them, as a kid. I couldn't get enough sad, slow songs. And I didn't start really exploring music until a few years later. I was a very late bloomer, re: the world. very sheltered. but once I started, I never stopped!

Yeah, that's the radio set from the show I was sourcing. ...Henley played with Mojo Nixon?
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:24pm
Austin Rich:

↳ postconsumer @8:22
I was probably very similar. (Late Bloomer and not really interested in things most kids cared about.) But the radio was sort of way I could have a sort of one-sided conversation with pop-culture, and I sort of listened and absorbed everything I could hear. But I didn't really go out to meet people very often until I was out of High School.
Avatar 👻 Swag For Life Member 8:25pm

I wasn't ALLOWED to listen to the radio. Very religious household. Kind, but conservative... It must have been 1987 when I started rebelling, and within a year or two they didn't even blink at what I was listening to. Unless I tried to play it FOR them... ha. Some good stories, there... :)

My family listened to the radio together often. There was the Polish language show on WLIB from the late 50s to early 70s, then we listened to WOR in the 70s. There was Top 40 AM stations that we listened to in the car on trips to the beach or elsewhere. Of course my older siblings would listen to album-oriented FM stations in the 60s. We listened on the Grundig that my parents brought with them to the U.S. Even though we listened at home mostly together, we each had our own tastes and favorites.

I've talked about it a bit when I reminisced about my parents. Dad and I listened to shortwave on the Grundig exploring it like a roulette wheel. Mom loved her Easy Listening station. We ALL loved listening to Bob & Ray. We would repeat lines from their shows decades later and crack each other up.

It's funny how easy it was to punish through the TV, or music, or fill in the blank. Certainly not being allowed to watch the Dukes of Hazzard for some dumb reason left an impact on me, and when I did finally watch that show, was disappointed in how dumb it really was. Like, I wanted to see that, so badly, for years? Sigh.
