Favoriting Acid Jazz Hands with Bronwyn Bishop: Playlist from January 31, 2025 Favoriting

Bronwyn Bishop's avatar View Bronwyn Bishop's profile Favoriting

Musical theater from off the beaten path. Obscure and unusual show tunes from within the canon and without, flops, failures, and the newest works from up-and-coming artists—plus tried-and-true hits. Also, occasional appearances from songs that are not show tunes (but only if they go really well with show tunes).

Hi Bronwyn, fellow AJH listeners. Thanks for leading off with this song sung by Marianne Faithfull. What a distinctive, great voice. She will be missed.

I saw Marianne perform the Weill / Brecht songs at BAM years ago. Great show but it would have been better in a smoky nightclub

Also, Bronwyn, Joe McGasko mentioned your name in his program on Monday. He credited you for the original idea of doing a show from the Lincoln Center Library for the Performing Arts. Joe gives credit where it's due.

If used sparingly, that could work well, in my opinion. But if Bronwyn prefers to be stealthy and silent for that show, since this isn't the broadcast stream, she can do that. There was a DJ on the Drummer Stream on Sunday afternoons, a 3-4 hour show, and she almost NEVER spoke. She hasn't been on for about 2 months now, though.

Yeah, this is great. I think most of my tiny collection of NY stage musicals is early 20th C. When I hear stuff like this I think of Roland Barthes, whose notion of photography involves the "punctum," that datum in the image that reveals its contingency. Here, all the extraneous noises are "puncta," indicia of what actually occurred in that space at that time.
