The core of Big Planet Noise was formed when Bob Irwin was just 5 years old. The day he picked up his first 45, the whole thing set to spinning – and records and music have been pretty much all he’s thought about ever since. Avocation eventually became vocation, leading to Sundazed Music and Modern Harmonic, all drawing inspiration from Bob’s legendary collection. But, what good is having so many records if no-one else can hear them with you?

Big Planet Noise is Bob’s way of inviting everyone over to hang out in the music room while he and co-host Gina Bacon flip through the stacks and play great records. And – the BPN chat room is where the action is… they yak about what’s on the turntable, tell stories, backstories, and share what was had for dinner, friends ’n family style. Gina keeps the celestial orbit steady-as-it-goes; making sure the stylus stays in the groove, the stacks don’t teeter and the drinks don’t spill all over the console. NB: Gina can also be heard on Saturday afternoons as the host of Someday Matinee (also on WFMU's Give The Drummer Radio stream), a show filled with live musical performances and artist interviews, direct from Music City.

There’s a reason it’s called Big Planet Noise… the show covers a lot of musical ground; familiar, forgotten, unheralded, unheard… The sonic menu is ever-changing; you’ll hear oddball teens, psychedelic wizards, mod lads, sitar savants, space-cadets, groovy soundtracks, and maybe even some bossa nova, when it feels right.

Proud parent moment: My daughter (8th grade) and one of her friends just attended a "fundraising" event at a chain Mexican joint in our 'hood, the point being to buy the gruel they purvey, some percentage of which accrues to the school. My daughter urged her friend to eschew the chain crap, then took her to a mom-and-pop joint across the street and smuggled the good grub into the joint, where they hung out with their pals. I am so proud of my daughter for cheating the system!

Discotech Underground:

Many of the music shows of the 60's were recorded on 2" quadraplex video tape which is very heavy and back in the was very expensive. (a half hour reel cost about $500 1966 dollars) To save costs, tapes were routinely bulk erased and reused. Many Hullabaloo shows were lost that way and from what I hear the Lloyd Thaxton Show met with a similar fate. Unless film kinescopes were made, those shows are gone forever. All the color videotapes of Happening, the follow up show to Where The Action Is were bulked and the only thing that exists are kinoscope films of a handful of shows.

Even if the tapes still exist, finding working machines to transfer them to modern digital is difficult and very expensive. More regional shows were aired live and never taped to begin with, like Swingin' Time and Upbeat from the upper midwest.

That's common in the footage world. People price themselves out of the market so nothing happens to it, meanwhile the tapes or films deteriorate to the point of being unusable. I have had 16mm film turn vinegar syndrome on me and curl up to the point where you can't thread it in a projector any longer to make a transfer. Footage holders end up screwing themselves on that bargain.

The other problem is that physical media no longer generates the return it once did because everyone streams rather than purchasing an actual DVD or Blu-Ray. Paying some ungodly amount for a vintage 60's TV show which is a niche market anyway and trying to market it is a losing game now. That's not including all the other "rights" you have to get just to do it in addition to the actual footage.

Something similar happened with silent movies. The 'Hollywood' series by Kevin Brownlow and David Gill got held up for DVD release because the estates of long-dead stars kept holding out for money they could never realistically hope to get. The last I heard, Brownlow gave up. YouTube now has copies made from VHS and LD.

I have a reel right now that is of a college marching band going to the Rose Bowl parade. It's from the 40's, it's Kodachrome film so it's beautiful....but there are splices every eight to ten seconds and every one of them trips the gate and you lose the loop. It's amazing 40's color footage but it would take me a month to redo every splice in that reel, and there is on continuity to it...it's just random pieces spliced together that jump around as far as subject matter, and they need to be reedited back into sequence....but again, we're talking hours and hours and hours of work that I'm just not prepared to deal with right now! Hopefully I get to it before VS sets in.

The hold up is, while the films are PD, the families own the intellectual property rights to the actor name and image. They have to pay to put the star on the DVD packaging and use their name on the package as well. Without that, you got nothin', so the films just rot and substandard copies end up on You Tube where people watch them for free.

Vinegar syndrome is what happens when Kodak safety film breaks down chemically. It has a powerful smell that is just like vinegar which is why they call it vinegar syndrome. There's really not much you can do once it starts and it's difficult to predict. Sometimes it depends on how the film was stored or the chemical composition of the film itself. I have film that is over 80 years old that is like brand new and i have film from the 1960's that's so badly warped from vinegar syndrome the only thing to do is throw it out because it's ruined forever.

Properly maintained is the key....sometimes it wasn't and when it's discovered, the effects of that are tragic. Magnetic tape can sometimes be baked and a safety copy made but film is harder once the decomposition sets in. Sometimes you can get one last run, other times you might be able to do frame-by-frame but those machines are expensive.

I remember reading in Trouser Press in the late 70's that Zappa had TDK tapes that were only 5+ years old, already showing signs of oxide shedding. Yep...there are only so many hours in a day and you have to run it at real time. If you get a splice break or a hair in the gate, you have to start all over again. It's a laborious process but when you get it in on digital, that's a huge accomplishment.
