A combination of collage, new experimental records and other bits and bobs, Mid-Valley Mutations is a tour through the mind of Austin Rich, who has been broadcasting in some form since 1998. Heavily influenced by Dr Demento, Don Joyce and old fashioned College Radio, Austin creates Audio Essays on a variety of subjects, and even just plays records, from time to time. Sometimes Live music and Interviews will grace the program, helping create a situation where you don't really know what you're going to hear, when you tune in. What you need to know is when you enter the Mid-Valley region, be prepared for the Musical Mutations... in whatever form they take.

Looking up the latter online, I was amazed that a recurring skit spoofed the 1966 American schlock show “The Time Tunnel”! Jenny Agutter acted in it!

circa 1988

Xeres - (backing vocals) and saxophone
Bruce Nealley - drums
Lewis Schroeder - tape loops
Sue Brown - keyboard

Last night, I had this dream. And it's based in fact.

(Dream of a bicycle.)

Bicycles are very...very important to me. This particular dream was about a custom bicycle that I made for a friend of mine, whose name is J.J.

(J J J J J J J J J J...)

J.J. is a very volatile person. He's a wonderful guy. He's the kind of guy that you really wonder about a lot. J.J. asked me to build a custom bike last summer. He had just gotten back from a ride, and we were closing up the shop. And I...I heard someone pounding on the back door.

"Hey, Dwan-buddy! You can build me a custom bike, can't ya? It will be the fastest one in the universe, haw?"

And I said, "Well, I would love to build you a bike, J.J."

And he leaned against the window and said "All right, Dwan-buddy! All right, Dwan-buddy! All right!"

And I said "All right, J.J. Oh, and J.J.? I LOVE ya."

And he said, "Yeah, Dwan-buddy. Yeah."

The next day he came to the shop. I said, "Hi J.J., how ya doin'?" And I stuck my hand out.

And he said, "Hi Dwan-buddy. Look at those hands. I can tell you're going to build me the best bike in the world, because I can just see that in those hands."

And then we shook hands. And he kind of laughed. Threw back his head, and laughed, you know, a little bit too much. And it surprised me. He gave me a down payment. And we decided how we were going to build it. And I built him a bike. And I...

(Dream of a bicycle. Dream.)

Over the summer I found out just how crazy J.J. was. He'd hang out, and you'd wonder when he was going to leave. One day he'd hang out at the shop all day, and he just laid himself down in the clothing department, and took a nap. Well, anyway. I built a bike for J.J. Just got it done a couple weeks ago. And he really likes it.

And the dream part is...the dream part is crazy too. J.J. loved his bike so much. He wanted to tell everybody in the world. He LOVED his bike. He rented himself a plane. He rented himself a Cessna. And he got into the Cessna. And he had a banner made. It was purple. And it had red and green and yellow and blue letters, and white dots. I'm not really sure what it said. It said...I think it said, "I love my Co-Motion bicycle." Or it just said "Co-Motion Bicycles." It changed with every time I looked at it, but that doesn't mean that it was always like that. The basic message was he...he loved his Co-Motion bicycle. But he was so excited about it! The man did not belong piloting a Cessna. And he was. He was...he was having a great time flying the plane. He flew high. He went around in circles. All over the great city of Eugene. People were riding around on their bikes trying to follow him. Sloping down low. Yeah it was...it was pretty. But he was getting too excited about flying the plane. He was having too much fun - I think, I'm not sure. Taking the plane up too high, taking nose dives too low. He was frightening people. He'd go around Spencer's Butte. And then he did a bi-i-i-ig loop-de-loop in the air. A big loop-de-loop. Loop-de-loop, in the air. And I knew that he wasn't going to make it out of that loop. And he...he did a nose dive. Right into the Willamette River. And it scared the shit out of me. I remember jerking alert in bed. "J.J.!!" Turns out it was the middle of January. I had to dive into the river and try to get J.J. out of the plane. And I'm not sure if I got him out or not. I don't know what happened after that. And I'll never know. I guess...I...I guess I'll never find out, you know? It's like when you have one of those dreams where you're going to fall off a cliff or something, and you fall, and you never know if you get to the bottom or not. Well, you know...

(You shouldn't have ever...shouldn't have ever...shouldn't have ever woke up.)

I should have never woke up

(Then you would know.)

Because if I was still asleep, I would know. And it's been disturbing me all day.

(All day, ladies and gentlemen. All day! Can you imagine that?)

The WORLD DEBUT of this song! Mr. X and I remixed this, from a stereo capture that he made, from the original live jam session. I created 10 different "digital stems" of the original recording, and then mixed them in different ways to try and bring out the different instruments and whatnot. It's not DRAMATICALLY different, but there's some subtle improvements over the original.
