When I was in Wisconsin, we hit, as we always do, and they had a thing going with a display of banned books and other "political" books that were all covered in plain brown paper with a summary handwritten on the front but no other metadata. I grabbed one. "Dazzling, readable. atmospheric work that portrays Berlin in 1033 -- chronicling the unfolding of the Nazi rise in chilling & tense writing. You get a glimpse into an increasingly terrifying time and place. Hard to put down. $9." I am guessing Isherwood and am hereby about to peel off the brown paper wrapper.
