In response to our previous thread: I do recall that exchange with Lauren. I always interpreted it as meaning something else, but having the double-meaning of referring to the affair. Maybe I was trying to add depth to that scene that isn't there?

It's been well established that Richard is a dog when it comes to women, and that he even seems to like bragging about it to his "girlfriend." I have said before: I don't think he's a good match for Helen, who seems pretty cool for a rich gal, and more pointedly, pretty loyal to her partner, unlike him. This part of his character is pretty consistent, unfortunately, and often just comes off as sexist, and is a big turn-off for a lot of folks. I try to enjoy the show as an artifact of its time, but I really don't like the way Diamond treats the women in the show.

I would be more angry with the way the actor characterizes Otis as a "bumbling idiot." But he is portraying a police officer, so it appears they have decided to try a little, "truth in radio representations."

This is some of the most dialog that Chris, the Cafe Tambourine's bartender, has ever gotten! He's often just referenced, or gets one or two words before Rocky moves on to something else. Rocky himself mentions how often Chris does X or Y. You get the sense that Chris really runs the Tambourine, and probably has his own wild adventures we don't often get to hear about.

There was a version of that plot point in the movie, but I don't really recall that movie super well. They might have watered it down more.

I heard there is a two-part, animated movie that came out recently, that is more faithful to the comic, but is still stream-lined to fit better in two-movies. I'll have to see it before I can really rate it, but I'm curious.

I have seen a lot of arguments against nostalgia lately. Well, in terms of creating new experiences as a human, sure.

In terms of entertainment, if one has the attention span for subtlety and nuance, and especially if they have the impulses of a historian, there is some appeal for nostalgia.

I certainly struggle with nostalgia. (As they say, it is a "toxic impulse.") I like a lot of old things, but old things aren't always things that I grew up with, or was familiar with as a kid. So I'm not sure I have nostalgia for the things I play.

I will say that thing I have the most nostalgia for is listening to ANYTHING on a radio, since it is something I've done since I was very young - 7? 8? Earlier, if I count when I would listen to what my parents played. But I think the dragon I'm chasing is tuning in, and being amazing by the NEXT thing, and then THE THING AFTER THAT. That's the thing that I'm looking for: a radio experience.

This is a story that I think works VERY well the first time, and still works afterward, but in a different way. You can tell this is supposed to be a "comedy" because they're already using the "comedy music cues" to help guide you...

Murray Leinster, the author of this story, was one of those pulp writers who worked in a number of genres: mystery, romance, science fiction, westerns, "far east" fiction, and a number of others, too. While he wrote more Sci-Fi than the others, he was well versed in nearly any kind of storytelling, and was a very versatile kind of writer.

Somewhat akin to this, maybe, I'm nostalgic for tuning into radio when everything was new to me. Now I'm not jaded, per se, I don't think, but I hear something I've never heard and I immediately start, in my mind, going, this sounds like this and this and this that I already know. My dad worked for a phone company, after he took some classes at ITT. He spent a lot of time learning a lot about phones and how they worked, but was really a manual laborer who got hurt and went to college to pass the time. All the electronic he worked on when I was growing up were super clunky, with weird wires everywhere, bad soldering, etc. He experience at the phone company caused him to get hired by Intel, where he learned computer networking when it was still pretty new. The way he fixed electronics was pretty "brute force" at times, but it often worked, and it sort of reminds me of the lead in this story.

I saw that in the theater, it wasn't too bad.

"You, me, and me next week," should be the name of an album.

I like how strange that gal can be. She's wonderfully weird.

I only read the script... so I got a pretty good idea of what it was!

Emily The Criminal is really good. NOT a comedy!

I do appreciate the running gag that the girlfriend's dad is always leering at women on TV. I've seen too many old men do that when I was caregiving.

I’m not sure. The eponymous short story collection was published in 1980, but a solo reading of it appears on the 1976 LP “HARLAN! Harlan Ellison Reads Harlan Ellison.”
In 1985, Bruce Willis acted in a less profane version for the revived "Twilight Zone" TV series.

While there is a plot reason why the lead should not trust the person he is talking to on the phone, I do appreciate the symbolic meaning of not trusting one's self. That feels VERY relatable, and I think Borges wrote, like. four stories based on that theme.

Another usage of the stock NBC Car Crash SFX tonight!

What was the first time travel story where a character meets a past or future version of himself? I think it was Robert Heinlein’s “By His Bootstraps” (1941).
The Watchmen team of Moore/Gibbons hilariously employed Heinlein’s idea in their story “Chronocops”, an s-f “Dragnet” where Joe Friday and his partner keep running into time traveling versions of themselves.

Rick and Morty similarly met themselves in the time travel episode of their 4th season.

Even with all the comedy SFX, there was a part of me, the first time listening to this story, that was expecting a VERY grim ending. I think this story does a good job a keeping you guessing.

I unfortunately watched The Flash movie that came out a year or two ago, and Flash does run so fast that he meets different versions of himself on the space/time continuum...

That used to happen a fair amount in old Flash comics when I would read them, back in the 80's.

There is an Asian movie where webcams are used to depict an error in the space/time continuum, and so an epic drama unfolds simply because there is a 90 second delay between two webcams in the same building... I do not recall the name of the movie, sadly.

"- All You Zombies - " (Heinlein) famously (spoiler) has most of the characters, male and female (!) be the same person. Appropriate for Trans Visibility Day!
