Born 91 years ago today in Houston, TX, Horace Elva Tapscott was a giant in stature, in music, and in the L.A. community, where he dwelled for much of his life and career, founding the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra and promoting local musicians and political causes, landing on the FBI's watch list. Over three hours of his music today: his was a singular talent

Exactly...his output was not as prolific as some, and the smaller labels that put out most of his earlier works made it even more difficult. I bet it was not easy back in the day to pick some of these titles up even when they were contemporary. Of my jazz LP collection (probably 3K titles, give or take) I have exactly ZERO OG issues of anything he's on.

I remember looking for Tapscott albums in the 80s or 90s at the 2 big stores in NYC at the time (J&R and Tower). J&R had The Giant is Awakened (I think just v2), Tower had nothing. And this was just on CD.

I had Tidal for a whie, but I found between listening to WFMU and my own purchases (not to mention the record library), I hardly ever used it, so at one point I cancelled it. I can see it being useful for preliminary listening to albums you're considering buying, but I hardly used it then. Too much music, too little time...

If you're not a big streamer, it's not worth it. These days I'm really happy with streaming WFMU on my WiiM Pro Plus and listening to LPs on the big rig. I'm in "the biz" and have access to some of the best high-end audio hardware, but what I have now suits me just fine.

The LP12 is a joy. I make a point of playing decidedly non-audiophile discs on it, especially when I've completed an upgrade. A beat-up America, History: Greatest Hits, for instance, is just stunning. Last night I played an Al Jarreau album I love. Blows me away.
