Not exclusively religious:

Ancient Greek History. At Athens, a public office or duty which the richer citizens discharged at their own expense.

1836
The State received the aid of..what were termed liturgies from individuals.
E. Bulwer-Lytton, Athens (1837) vol. II. 461

1847
The Liturgies of the State, as they were called, unpaid functions such as the trierarchy, choregy, gymnasiarchy, which entailed expence and trouble upon the holder of them.
G. Grote, History of Greece vol. III. ii. xi. 159

1880
It was a species of liturgy—a voluntary contribution to a great public object.

Thus, its etymology:

post-classical Latin liturgia < ancient Greek λειτουργία public service, service of the gods, public worship, < λειτουργός (also ληιτ-, Hesych.) public servant, minister, < *λεῖτος (believed to be a variant of *λήιτος, public, recorded in the substantive uses λήιτον public hall, λήιτη, λήτη priestess; apparently a derivative of λεώς, λαός people) + ‑εργος that works. Compare French liturgie (16th cent.).

A very long time ago I heard Anthony Davis live with The New Delta Ahkri at NYU's student center. Later I also heard him at the Public Theater with a band that included Leroy Jenkins, George Lewis and Andrew Cyrille (which later recorded the CD Space Minds, New World, Survival of America).

Haven't reported on my alternation of 'city books' and 'creepy not-quite sci-fi books' since last year. "Manchester Unspun" by Andy Spinoza was a big disappointment to me. I was not expecting, and did not want, a band histories thing; I was expecting a more overall account of the human community from the 80s to the present. What I got, after the first few chapters, was an endless account of politicians and and property developers gentrifying it to hell, with far too little critique.

Preceded it perfectly with Ballard's "High-Rise". Followed it with M. John Harrison's "The Sunken Land Begins To Rise Again" -- a very creepy, mordantly funny and water-logged caricature of post-Brexit Britain. Should become as much of a classic as "High-Rise" if we survive that long.
