Hurley was a very special and enduring treat for me. It started with stumbling upon Long Journey’s great cover in a used bin in 1977. Hurley provided a warmly personal soundtrack thereafter.

Interesting guitar for a "folkie", acoustic f-hole. Generally think of them as swing band rhythm guitars. Has a bit more of a trebly sound (he also plays a bit like a blues man, ditching rhythm, counterpoint notes, nice!)

I will say this about Christgau: He edited my copy on several occasions, and he is hands down the best editor I've ever had in my half-century as a published writer. His taste in music is a separate issue.

doctorjazz. I agree. I loved the terse economy in his reviews, like with The Mad Peck. Funny and great turns of phrase- even when dismissive. I remember falling down the wonderful Residents rabbit hole based on his review of Fingerprince as “ like Eno with a chip on it’s shoulder”😆
