Not the Odyssey, it's based on The Anabasis by Xenophon.
Xenophon was a general of a Greek army, fighting for the Persians Cyrus is named for King Cyrus. They win a big battle, but King Cyrus is slain. So they have to fight their way all the way back to Greece, across the ancient Middle East.

I get ya, I used to live in Buffalo in my college days and a few years after and they had a lot of abandoned buildings. So I would go explore them and just imagine how they used to be. Or sometimes what they could be. Or just have a sense of feeling.
