saw fred moten a couple of weeks ago perform with brandon lopez and at the end of the performance moten trailed off into an anecdote about seeing a punk/ funk band in san francisco in the late eighties. he said the punks in the audience just stood there, clueless, when the band started playing funk, not knowing how to move to it, until the band’s singer, told them to mosh and they proceeded to act out a beat on each other to the music…implying punks can’t move without violence… from personal experience i know this is not true and no trur historically with the example of 99 records who had both esg and bush tetras on the disco charts at the same time...

no wave is a pretty nebulous genre, a lot of really eclectic artists under that umbrella (the aforementioned james chance, swans, glenn branca, i've even heard someone lump in yoko ono too)
