Re. the conditions in French prisons, I am not entirely sure the conditions are that great any longer... overcrowding is a huge issue and violence is rife... of course, it is all relative... I am not sure how it compares with the prisons in the US but I am not sure the French ones are that much better... also I think it really varies from prison to prison... the one not far from where I grew up in Marseille was famously atrocious!

?:

gentrification has been a persistent problem for at least 200 years. The west village used to be lovely farm land. What is shocking is that in all this time no one has come up with practical means to check and balance this. It is a side effect of economic disparity. The rich get richer and (ab)use that enhanced position to manipulate governmental powers at all levels to their advantage, making them richer and even more powerful. This becomes a 2 fanged power, on the one hand they have the government officials making laws and rulings in their favor, on the other hand being rich puts them in control of a larger portion of the general economy than a regular person. There is the key - they control the economy, they control people's access to a living wage and they control (manipulate) the costs of things which they can easily afford in all economies. Make the rich pay a larger portion of the larger percentage of the economy that they control in taxes. Their wealth makes their individual vote unequal to the vote of a laborer; they manipulate behind the scenes so much with their wealth that their vote is a secondary consideration.
