Brass Band Spectacular starring Hungry March Band live!
Hear this show now:
Pop-up player!
The Hungry
March Band is a politically-charged super-sized parade, party and protest band drawing on brass (and non-brass) traditions from around the world. Tonight is a tuneup for the band's upcoming European tour, during which it will join hundreds of other musicians in a brass band summit - Le
festival des fanfares de Montpellier, France June 10-11. The band plays all the time in New York too, in all sorts of environments from subways to nightclubs to the Coney Island Mermaid Parade; find out what's in store at: http://www.hungrymarchband.com
The live set by Hungry March Band is at the top of the show and runs approximately an hour and fifteen minutes. Afterwards members of the
band stop by to guest dj and turn us on to various strains of the global brass
phenomenon: The Western European scene that they have begun exploring, the growing movement in the US to create alternative / avant / politicized bands; and indigenous appropriations of colonial-era brass band music in Eastern Europe, Africa and beyond.
Special thanks to Chris Stubbs for another magnificent job engineering.
Erratum: Those big things I kept calling tubas during the live set - well, they're really sousaphones - ! (We set the record straight during the guest-dj segment after the live set.)
Alert: This show consists almost entirely of brass band music - !
