I lived in the LA area in 1969-74, and I saw the Johnny Otis show many times with all the players Dave Alvin mentioned, usually at the Ash Grove on Melrose Ave in Hollywood. It was exactly as Dave described. We probably attended some of the same gigs! Also saw the Byrds at the Ash Grove during that same period. Fun times!

I loved The Blasters. I saw them open for Jon and The Nightriders at The Whiskey, A benefit for The New York Rocker with Los Lobos in Pasadena (I walked to that show) and open for The Ventures at The Starwood in West Hollywood...

They were the turning point, when the limitations of the L.A. punk scene started to evolve into something larger.

Whittier Blvd. really didn't factor into the music scene at that time. It was locked into it's own legacy(cruising in low riders).

The East L.A. bands had their own scene as well. X was always supportive of marginalized Chicano punk bands, but even they couldn't break them loose.
