Got busted for less than two joints in Phoenix AZ on my first drive across country when I was 20. It was a felony then. I had to strip and be sprayed with de-licer and was in a cell with 7 other felons, slept on a metal bunk with no mattress and bare feet. Got bailed out after two and a half days, other wise I would have had to wait for my hearing in ten days. It was reduced to a misdemeanor. Fu(k Phoenix!

oh man, it was a lot of fun. The host built a stage for us but it was so wobbly and flimsy feeling I was kind of afraid to move. It looked petty good though. An adorable little girl kept coming to the front of the stage an announcing it was her birthday, so Andrew, being a nice person starts singing the damn song so of course I have to do it too or look like a real sourpuss. Also there were a lot of giant teens there, one of whom said we were"dope" or something and did we do any Red Hot Chili Peppers covers. The fish fry was excellent. We got swarmed by Formosan termites but it was just for about three songs.

So, better-than-average gig.

Be sure to check out the song "Someday Man", written by Roger and Paul Williams, and one of their early entries into pop songwriting success. Paul himself re-recorded it about a year after The Monkees release and Someday Man was the title of his own solo album. Great tune...I'm kind of partial to Paul's version but The Monkees' has the Wrecking Crew with Bones Howe producing. Great b-side for The Monkees

Learned tons from Richard Thompson's book and he reads the audio version like a master. The Buck anecdote really stuck with me. I wondered if their paths ever crossed when they were both on Capitol in the 80s. Saw Buck perform at his Bakersfield club in 1996. I still remember him telling this "joke": "Bill Clinton is walking in front of the White House with two big dogs. A guy stops him and Bill says 'Yeah, I got these two dogs for Hillary.' And the other guy says 'Sounds like a good trade.'" Guessing Buck was an early fan of Fox.

Seemed like most rarely had a full house of customers. After the feds busted "Little Nicky" Scarfo in the mid-80's, all of those pizza parlors were gone. That wasn't Boerum Hill in Brooklyn? There used to be a WEIRD little "shop" with a guy sitting at a desk and a shelf with like four Revell car models, and nothing else. The fellow at the desk had an unwelcoming mien.
On Bond or Hoyt Street, maybe?

Joe Osborne is the one who gave The Carpenters their shot, I believe he had them cut demos at his own studio and then word spread how good they were, so they owed ol' Joe some thanks for helping them break in with those early recordings. I think that's the story anyway...

Joe Osborne is genius on bass, one of my favorite players. Never changed his strings on his original Jazz Bass and cut all those hits with perfect intonation. Amazing.
