Jonathan Richman Concert Report
I saw Jonathan Richman and Tommy Larkins at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle on Wednesday night. The show started promptly, a little after 8PM. The venue was full. One dude commented on my WFMU t-shirt saying, “That’s a perfect shirt for a Jonathan Richman concert.” The house lights stayed on, and Jonathan was carrying a parlor guitar with nylon strings, no strap, and barely mic’ed. He seemed to be in a good mood and had funny stage banter with Tommy and the crowd. He talked about “feelings” a lot. He played some hits “Summer Feeling”, “Pablo Picasso”, “Lesbian Bar”. He sang several songs in Italian which were lovely. Dancing was kept to a minimum, and he focused on soloing on the guitar. The crowd was enthusiastic and responsive to Jonathan and his cues. He played for over an hour and a half, which was apparently 20 minutes more than he had played the other 3 nights. My wife and I enjoyed the show.
Also, thanks to the Tractor for cleaning their soda lines. My Tito’s and soda tasted like a vodka soda and not a bucket of mop water from grandma’s musty basement.

Last week I mentioned how Carol Kaye attacking and disparaging Hal Blaine as a person and his drumming was a very bad look...well there's another I remembered. Not to pile on, but still worth noting. In the Brian Wilson biopic Love & Mercy, they hired a professional bassist from LA named Teresa Cowles to portray Carol in the 60's scenes. The costume designers created an outfit for her to wear that was almost a direct copy from a photo of Carol taken in the studio with her bass. Teresa looked as close to Carol as you could probably get...AND she played Carol's bass parts as heard in the movie (they took live audio from the actors in the studio since most of the actors playing the musicians were professional musicians themselves). And I remember Carol tore into Teresa online about something or another in her portrayal, and again it was a very bad look and uncalled for since she was an actual bass player and played the role to a T, no disrespect or clownish theatrics at all. Hard to figure that stuff out as much as I love Carol as a musician.

It’s not just that “they never used that phrase” [wrecking crew] is those years when those sessions were being done, it’s that nobody else called them that either. Kaye feels like the world has been misled that they were known by that name, when they weren’t. She says Tedesco never claimed to believe they were called that himself, but came up with that “name” as a promotional “hook” for his documentary and for those musicians. So she feels that late in life she’s been unexpectedly saddled with this “wrecking crew” thing from which she can’t escape, and not by her own choice.

Yes it was very accurate, Hal was both a mentior and close friend of Brian's in the 60's and he also gave him validation for his "new" music which Brian didn't always get from his own bandmates and father. And Hal tells a very sad story about when Brian's dad sold "Sea Of Tunes" in 1969, which crushed Brian, and soon after Brian showed up at Hal's house carrying a box of gold records he had received for all those 60's Beach Boys hits and wanted to give them to Hal because they weren't his songs anymore. Hal packed the gold records back in the box and gave them back to Brian, telling him these songs are you and they'll always be yours. So yes, Hal had a pretty strong relationship with Brian at that time and helped him quite a bit.
