WFMU’s website broke on July 3rd, and remains partially broken now.
Please go to this address in order to reach WFMU’s live streams and playlist and chat pages: freeform.wfmu.org again, that new web address is freeform.wfmu.org

Our pop-up archive player is working again, and archives also still work from our three mobile apps – “WFMU Radio” and the “WFMU Archive Bunker” in the Apple iTunes App Store, and the “Woof Moo Player” in the Google Play store.

Sorry for this outage! Our IT team is working round the clock trying to get things back to what passes as “normal” at WFMU.

I can still (for whatever reason) clearly re-experience sitting at the breakfast table in winter 1973, before school, listening to AM radio, and the set was Rick Nelson's 'Garden Party', Glen Campbell's 'Ann', Dolly Parton's 'Jolene', and Sly Stone's 'Family Affair'. As a ten year old who liked to play baseball and light fires, The Byrds were a profound influence. Musically of course, but those early pictures! Of course as a kid who was milk chocolate brown with curly short hair, it would be an impossible fantasy to try and emulate. But I tried! The closest I got was a pair of granny glasses that I would wear to baseball practice.

I went through a weird phase in my thirties when I arranged my LPs by label, partly because it made the spines look interesting on the shelf. I was surprised to find that I had more Columbia LPs than any other label. All the Bob Dylans, all the 60s and 70s Miles Davises, my first Steve Reich and Terry Riley... Before the great Columbia jazz purge of 1973 ( www.honest-broker.com... ) they had significant albums by Ornette and Keith Jarrett.

I was able to confabulate my idea of an album cover in the Summer of 1966. On a family vacation to San Francisco, we went to The Legion of Honor - a museum full of musty painting and other remnants of past. I saw a bronze statue of Shiva, the Hindu goddess of war raising her many arms and standing on one foot. Later that week, we went to Muir Beach in Marin County where I convinced my father to take a picture of me with a traffic cone on my head wearing my granny glasses and striking a pose like
Shiva.

I think I was trying to make art, but I was thinking about Soupy Sales.

I just remembered that "Living Time," the weirdest, wonderfulest Bill Evans album, was on Columbia.

FT- I knew Bob would have to spin from this debut slab. I was just talking yesterday about the infamous middle finger caper on the M.G. album cover.

...yes. I heard it was the result of Jim Marshall trying to get 'the best shot'. He was dragging Moby Grape all over Marin. Finally, he found that junk shop in Fairfax. The finger was Don Lewis saying we're done.

Was that what you heard?
