Hello! I imagined the Summer Movie Series starts today so yesterday my son and I listened to "The Singing Critic". No spoilers from us, only the opinion it is worth a re-listen.

I agree! I think this episode pays off for people who have listened for a while, and appreciate the kinds of stuff Dick Powell does best.

This is the "conclusion" to the "do they like my singing in the building next door" storyline. This was born out of the fact that the show would get a lot of letters about the songs, with fans weighing in one way or the other. This "three episode storyline" was their "answer" to those letters.

For those who might not remember: a running gag on the show is that this neighbor does not like Richard's singing, and often complains. A couple episodes ago, they talked about getting lots of letters about the singing, and were wondering what the "people in the other building" thought of his singing. The following episode, Richard had a particularly rough case, and decided not to sing. So here we are, with the conclusion...

This dialog is funny!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm

Pat Cosack, an obvious parody of Pat Novak, who is the "shamus in Frisco" that "Cosack" mentions. He's doing a vague Jack Webb impersonation as Cosack, since Pat Novak was played by Webb.

This episode aired on Guy Fawkes Day, which isn't usually celebrated in the US. Still, I'm always interested in what the people listening might have been thinking about at the time.

This transitional musical riff is from the song, "I"m An Old Cowhand," by Johnny Mercer. Since they made a cowboy reference, the music cue decided to riff on that, something this show does from time to time.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:32pm
Austin Rich:

That Richard Diamond episode is pretty much all in-jokes and references to previous episodes, and sort of only makes sense if you've heard a few other episodes. Not a lot of other radio programs did stuff like this in the late 40's, as most shows wanted their shows to be evergreen, and easy to enjoy for new and old listeners.

Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:46pm
Austin Rich:

I'm sure I've mentioned this before, but:

When these shows were made, they were recorded and distributed via transcription discs. These discs came in a variety of lengths and kinds. I've seen some that have 30 minutes on a side. I've seen others that have 15 minutes - or less - on a side. Often, transcription discs were just stacked - without sleeves - in the corner of a radio station, and often forgotten about for years. (And some discs had much worse fates.) Fans and nerds would collect them, when stations would like to get rid of them. Many transcription discs were filthy, or had damage, or just wouldn't play. For a long time, discs that didn't sound great didn't get a lot of distribution, when tape traders started putting their discs on cassette for others to listen to, or possibly play on the radio. The Internet era has really allowed shows that were damaged, or sounded worse, to get distribution. Hopefully some of my clean-up efforts will give some of these "noisy" episodes another opportunity to be enjoyed.

I watched the entire special one year, and that is not even the most bonkers thing that appears in that special! There's some really strange routines and songs, and I have been baffled by that particular special for years. It makes NO SENSE, even on a, "It's not supposed to make sense," kind of level. It really is an example of, "Let's just make a Christmas Show and not think about it too much," in action.

Robots playing sports seems like a very unlikely happening. It is the one thing that people can do better than a machine in almost every way... and to get a robot to perform like a person seems like a lot of wasted effort. Why not have a robot do something it is good at, and have people do the things they are good at?
