Artist Track Album Label Comments Special

Set 1: the beautiful music portion of the evening. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Ketawang: Pusawarna (track 1) (Listen: Pop-up)   Court Gamelan From The Pura Paku Alaman, Jogyakarta  Nonesuch (Explorer series)  In these 3 pieces, we hear the most beautiful gamelan music I know. To me, they are a culmination of it, in this specific case of the royal court music of Paku Alaman. The first 2 tracks really stand out, with #2 the most beautiful of all. Written around 1755, the work is considered a pusaka (heirloom), and is justifiably famous.  ***
Gending: Tedjanata/Ladrang Sembawa/Ladrang Playon (track 2) (Listen: Pop-up)   Court Gamelan From The Pura Paku Alaman, Jogyakarta  Nonesuch (Explorer series)    ***
Gending: Mandulpati/Ladrang Agun-Agun (track 3) (Listen: Pop-up)   Court Gamelan From The Pura Paku Alaman, Jogyakarta  Nonesuch (Explorer series)
Soeur Marie Keyrouz  Magnificat (track 1) (Listen: Pop-up)   Favoriting Cantiques de l'Orient  Harmonia Mundi  Quite beautiful. It's her interpretation of Eastern (Middle Eastern) Christian liturgical singing, but sung in Arabic. And she gets the full studio treatment.

She has recorded several albums, all of which I recommend highly.

Les Chakachas  Love is like a Violin (track 4)   Favoriting Arriba!  RCA International  Phat, sentimental sound. Feels like it's the slow song at the record hop.

Set 2: the old radio show portion of the evening. (Listen to this set: Pop-up)
Radio City Playhouse  Mother   Favoriting Originally broadcast September 11, 1948  (no label)  New Year's Eve...everyone's having fun except over-moralizing and scornful Mary...an invalid mother - she says...schizophrenic Mary, lonely Mary - who finally meets a fella on the way home and falls in love...she lies and chases him away...and about that mother - it seems she's been dead for 2 years. This episode is #12 in the series.

Radio City Playhouse, on air from 1948 - 1950, was known for its solid writing and acting.
