Trio Los Panchos | Mi Magdalena | 20 de Coleccion | Sony Latin | 1993 compilation | CD | Mexico's foremost trio, Los Panchos were a phenomenal success throughout Spanish America from the 1950s onward. The term "trio" has a special meaning in Mexico: it usually denotes a string band (guitar, requinto, and guitarron) whose members sing in three-part harmony. These bands -- still very common throughout Mexico -- play mainly boleros (such as this song) and other popular ballad forms. Los Panchos mostly performed original material, but early on the group also incoporated traditional folk songs from all over Latin America into their repertoire, recording a whole series of albums with titles like "Los Panchos en Paraguay." "Pancho," by the way, is the Mexican nickname for "Francisco." None of the members of Los Panchos was named Francisco -- the group's name is a warm little joke, a bit like the Spanish equivalent of "The Smiths." | 0:44:15 (Pop-up) | |
